Mangalore, May 26: Expressing shock over the arrest of activist Vidya Dinker and four others by Mangalore police, Sri Vishvesha Tirtha Swamji of Pejawar Mutt has demanded the intervention of Karnataka chief minister in the case.

The swamiji told mediapersons in Koppal that he telephoned Mr. Gowda and informed him about the arrest. “I am yet to know what led to the arrest. But I told the Chief Minister that Ms. Dinker was innocent. He told me that he would speak with (Deputy Speaker and Mangalore MLA) N. Yogish Bhat. The Chief Minister is in Mumbai,” the Swamji said.

Ms. Dinker and four others were arrested on charges of obstruction and use of vulgar language against Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner N.S. Channappa Gowda. The five were among the group of people who had gone to know the reason as to why the Deputy Commissioner failed to keep up his promise and visit the place near Kuloor where MSEZ had dumped earth in the Phalguni river, All the five have been remanded to judicial custody till June 7.

Meanwhile, several activists have condemned the action. Hanumanth Kamath from Nagarika Hitarakshana Vedike said the arrest showed the administration's intention to shut the mouth of people who raised their voice against injustice.

“The Deputy Commissioner is the representative of the Government posted to serve people. There was no need for him to book them for non-bailable provisions. He should have considered the cause Ms. Dinker was espousing,” he said.

The Democratic Youth Federation of India district unit president Muneer Katipalla said action against Ms. Dinker and four others would not come in the way of the fight for the cause of the people.

Peoples Union for Civic Liberties district unit president P.B. D'Sa said there was bound to be resentment among residents when the Deputy Commissioner did not keep up his appointment.

Communist Party of India's district secretary B. Madhava said the arrest showed a dangerous trend of curbing voices raised against rightful cause. Dakshina Kannada Pradesh Congress Committee vice-president Ivan D'Souza said the public had every right to question the Deputy Commissioner.

It was the duty of the Deputy Commissioner to pacify people and hear their problems. Social worker and Ombudsman for Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme Seena Shetty said the arrest could have been avoided by having discussion. The Deputy Commissioner on Friday visited Melukoppala and Atrebail where residents had complained of flooding because of dumping of mud. Mr. Gowda said steps were being taken to raise the left bank of the Phalguni river where the residents were staying. Directions had been given to survey a portion of parapet wall on the left bank, he said.

Mangaluru, Jan 11: A large number of people from the Women India Movement on Saturday staged a protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) here and raised slogans denouncing the newly enacted law.

Protestors were seen carrying placards that read, 'Stop diving India, Boycott CAA, NRC, NPR', 'We are humans, not criminals', 'Save India from fascism'.

"Today's youths are tomorrow's future. The present leaders are scared by the youths and are trying to wipe us out. They are scared of the students because they are raising their voices," a protestor told media.

"It started with the triple talaq, then the removal of Article 370 and Babri Masjid verdict. We Muslims kept quiet but now it is a question to our Constitution. We are not here as Muslims but as an Indian Citizen protesting against the cruelty of the BJP government," she added.

The protestor said the Central government is trying to make India a Hindu Rashtra by wiping out all other communities.

"This fascist government is trying to poison the minds of Hindus against the Muslims. After Muslims, there will be the Christian community and then other communities. The main motive of the government is to only keep Brahmins in India," added the protestor.

The newly-enacted law grants citizenship to Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Parsi, Buddhist, and Christian refugees from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh, who came to India on or before December 31, 2014.

Bengaluru, Jul 7: There seems no impact of Covid-19 on kharif crop sowing in Karnataka with the current year actually being ahead of previous years, according to an official here on Monday.

"In agriculture, as far as sowing is concerned, there is no impact of COVID-19," Agriculture Commissioner Brijesh Kumar Dikshit told IANS. One of the reasons, according to Dikshit, is that people in rural areas are aware, but not scared of the pandemic.

"In rural India, coronavirus is there. People are aware, not scared. They are taking precautions, but don't have any phobia," he said.

Another reason was that by June the number of infections in Karnataka was not as high as other states, when a lot of sowing was done, he said.

By the end of June, Karnataka saw 15,242 Covid-19 cases. Of that, 7,074 were active.

The sowing is ahead of previous year as it's mostly dependent on weather. "It's ahead of previous years. Agriculture is directed by weather and rains had been slightly earlier this year," he said.

According to Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre, at 185 mm the state received 14 mm less rain in June against the normal 199 mm. "It's like a normal year, or slightly a good year," he said.

Some crops will be sown in the last fortnight of July and few more will extend up to August 15. "The last two weeks will be critical and on July 31 we should be able to tell whether we are short or ahead," he said.

According to preliminary indications, the Commissioner said the area under agriculture is increasing this year, which could also be because that labourers might have come back.
