SKDRDP self-help groups save Rs. 16.43 crore

Mangalore, May 27: A total of 1.81 lakh families in Dakshina Kannada have saved Rs. 16.43 crore in 2011-12 through self-help groups, which now number over 18,000, under Sri Kshethra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP).

Disclosing this at a press meet here, SKDRDP director for Mangalore T. Sampath Kumar said members of the self-help groups showed a turnover of Rs. 278.39 crore in the financial year, mostly for development activities that improved their lives.

“Everywhere we hear about loan waiver, but here we have 100 per cent recovery,” he added.

An important aspect of the project was collection of money from beneficiaries through Suvidha, a facility where members could make payments between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m., and thereafter wherever required. With this, people made payment early in the day and proceeded for work. There were 558 people, 60 per cent of them women, manning the project, he said.

Mr. Kumar said nearly 16,000 people had been trained in agriculture-related aspects through 342 programmes, and claimed that youngsters were coming back to agriculture. The project provided pension or supported families that could not earn a living. In 2011-12, 403 families received an assistance of Rs. 21.42 lakh. As many as 401 families got organic gas units and solar lamps at a cost of Rs. 8.02 lakh.

The project covered 4 lakh members of 1.04 lakh families under the health insurance scheme. In the year, they received Rs. 8.51 crore for treatment of various diseases.

Bengaluru, Jun 10: The Karnataka Anti-Corruption Bureau on Wednesday conducted raids at 14 places linked to four government officials in the state.

On receiving received credible information about the officials amassing disproportionate assets, an illegal assets case was registered and raids are being conducted at 14 places linked to them, ACB said in a release.

It said the raids are still on and investigation is being carried out about their assets.

Raids are being conducted on properties linked to L Sathish Kumar, Additional Commissioner, Department of Commercial Tax; N Ramakrishna, Divisional Forest Officer, Srinivasapura, Kolar; Gopalshetty Mallikarjuna, Executive Engineer, District Development Cell, Raichur; Raghappa Lalappa Lamani, Krishna Bhagya Jala Nigam Ltd official in Almatti, Bagalkote, the release said.

Bengaluru, Jun 3: The Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences at Hubballi has successfully treated a COVID-19 patient through plasma therapy, state medical education minister K Sudhakar said today.

"Karnataka achieves yet another milestone in battle against #COVID19. KIMS Hubli has successfully treated a Covid19 patient through Plasma Therapy & is the first institute in the state to accomplish this. Congrats to KIMS doctors & staff for this feat!" Mr Sudhakar tweeted.

In plasma therapy treatment, plasma cells from a COVID-19 patient, who has recovered from the disease, is transfused to a coronavirus patient who is in critical condition to treat him.

Plasma therapy was effectively used in the past during Ebola and the Spanish flu pandemic.

Mangaluru, May 11: Hundreds of migrant labourers today gathered at a service bus stand in Mangaluru to return to Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand.

They were working in different parts of Dakshina Kannada and remained stranded without a job after the announcement of lockdown.

Labourers said that they have not registered with Seva Sindhu portal to avail pass for travelling outside the state.

Though all the people who gathered wore a mask, the physical distancing norm was not followed.

Already three Shramik trains from Mangaluru had left for Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar with nearly 3,500 stranded labourers in the last two days.

The gathered labourers are anticipating that they would be allowed to travel to their destinations in the Shramik trains that will leave in the evening from Mangaluru.

The doctors and paramedical staff who have arrived the spot are checking the health of the labourers before allowing them to travel to the railway station.

The cost of a ticket to Uttar Pradesh is Rs 1,040 per person (which includes bus fare from service bus stand to railway station, food and water bottle).
