Beedi workers press Yogish Bhat for immediate gazette notification of wage increment

Mangalore, May 28: Beedi workers under the banner of CITU, DYFI, and SFI demonstrated a sit-in at PVS circle on Monday urging Yogish Bhat, Deputy Speaker, Karnataka Legislative Assembly to press the state government to notify the increment of minimum wage for beedi workers to Rs. 116.20 in the state gazette without any further delay.

The protestors who approached the PVS circle in a procession, had initially planned to lay siege to Mr. Bhat's house.

Speaking on the occasion, Sunil Kumar Bajal, CITU leader, said that from the past four days beedi workers have been on an indefinite strike demanding an increase in the minimum wages as announced by the Chief Minister in the state budget. “Even though two months have passed, the state government has not notified the increase in the wages in the state gazette owing to which the beedi owners are not increasing pay. The government must act upon immediately. If not, we will continue laying siege to houses of MLAs and MPs”, he said.

Admitting that there has been a delay in the government issuing a gazette notification, Mr. Bhat said that he has already spoken to the Chief Minister and that the government would do the needful as soon as possible.

Dayanand Shetty, District Secretary, DYFI, in his address said that elected representatives have been keeping mum on various serious issues of the district including MSEZ mud dumping at Phalguni River near Kuloor and lack of a building at Lady Goschen Hospital. DYFI is with beedi workers in their struggle for increase of their pay, he said.

Mysuru, Aug 1: A young covid-19 warrior and activist has become the latest victim of novel coronavirus in Karnataka’s Mysuru district. 

The deceased is Khaleel ur Rahman (27), who was the office manager at Farooqia College of Pharmacy. 

During Covid-19 lockdown, he was working as a volunteer and was part of Mysuru City Corporation team also which is involved in the covid related work. 

Khaleel was also part of the team formed by IAS officer P Manivannan, who led the crucial Covid-19 relief efforts across Karnataka. He was also an activist of Social Democratic Party of India.

During the lockdown, he was distributing groceries and other necessary things among poor and migrants in Mysuru. 

Recently he fell ill and admitted to a private hospital. He was suffering from breathing difficulties. He breathed his last in the hospital without responding to any treatment.

Belagavi, Apr 12: Karnataka police have filed cases against seven people for hiding their visit to Delhi for attending a religious congregation at Nizamuddin Mosque, last month, police said on Sunday.

The Commissioner office here, in a statement said that Hirebagewadi police filed cases against seven persons including one participant and his family members and Tablighi leader for hiding information regarding participation in the religious meeting 'Tablighi Jamaat ' at Nizamuddin in New Delhi in March.

A youth from the Hirebagewadi village had visited New Delhi and hidden information about his visit and misguiding the Task Force officials when they visited his house. COVID-19 Task Force and Model officials informed the matter to Hirebagewadi police.

Bengaluru, Mar 13: Health Minister B Sriramulu on Thursday assured the House that the state government will recruit doctors in all Primary Health Centres across the state through direct recruitment by the end of April this year.

The minister was answering MLA A T Ramaswamy, who raised the issue of shortage of doctors on Thursday. Sriramulu said there are 2,359 primary health centres in Karnataka, of which 1,432 centres have permanent doctors, 436 have doctors on contract basis, 236 have Ayush doctors, 55 have doctors who work under rural service, and the rest work on contract basis under the National Health Mission.

Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, who had recently directed ministers to cancel KPSC recruitment and go for direct recruitment, expressed his anger  as it hasn’t been implemented even now. Sriramulu said, “I have directed the concerned District health officer to take action and go for direct recruitment. It will be done by end of April.”

He also said he is aware of the difference in salary between doctors working under the health department and those working under the medical education department. “This will also be rectified,’’ he assured.

Meanwhile, Sriramulu said that a hospital that he had inaugurated recently in Mysuru, has been shut due to the lack of doctors and furniture. “This will be sorted out soon,’’ he assured.
