Normalcy returns to Coast after peaceful Bundh

Mangalore/Udupi, May 31: Normalcy returned to the major cities and towns of coastal Karnataka, after a day-long Bundh.

Though the normal life was disrupted across Dakshina Kannda, Udupi and Uttara Kannda district due to the nationwide protest against petrol price hike described by BJP led NDA as 'Bharat Bundh' and Left parties as 'All India Protest Day', the 12-hour agitation was relatively peaceful.

Mangalore City Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh said that no untoward incidents were reported from city limits today. “Law and order situation was intact. Our men were patrolling all the areas effectively. But, since buses and autos were out of road, public faced some problem. In Tokkottu some people wanted to block the road, which we did not allow”, he said.

The ruling BJP in Karnataka described the Bundh as "successful as people across the state including in coastal cities supported it because of huge hike in the prices of petrol".

DK district BJP President Padmanabha Kottari a said the common man is facing lot of problems because of Rs7.50 hike in the price of petrol.

The bandh was successful in the entire Dakshina Kannada with all markets and business establishments remaining closed.

Udupi District BJP President Uday Kumar Shetty said that the suo moto support to the Bharath Bundh called by BJP had been an alarm bell to the anti-people UPA government at the Center. Earlier in the day Mr Shetty led a protest in front of Clock Tower in the temple city.

Though essential services, government offices, banks and insurance companies offices were spared from the Bundh, the traffic on the roads was negligible till evening.

As the buses remained off the road, attendance at government offices, courts, banks etc. was very thin. Restaurants, theaters in the heart of the city remained closed. In the outskirt of the city life was near to normal. Many of the Petrol pumps remained open till 10.30 - 11 am.

Dakshina Kannada records 90 new covid cases; total 915

Mangaluru, Jul 2: As many as 90 persons have tested positive for covid-19 in last 24 hours in Dakshina Kannada district.

With this, the total number of coronavirus positive cases in the district mounted to 915.

Out of the 90 positive cases, fifteen persons had returned from Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Dubai. A BJP MLA, DHO and a pathologist are also among those who infected.

HDK challenges PM Modi to offer 'scientific' explanation for candle-lighting call

New Delhi, April 5: Former Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy on Sunday challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to offer a "credible scientific and rational" explanation for his candle-lighting call and said he is giving "meaningless tasks" to an already exhausted population.

The JD(S) leader questioned if the Prime Minister asked the nation to observe a candle-light vigil on the eve of foundation day of BJP.

"Has the PM slyly asked the nation to observe a candle light vigil on the eve of foundation day of BJP? April 6 being its foundation day, what else can explain the choice of date & time for this event? I challenge the PM to offer a credible scientific and rational explanation," Kumaraswamy tweeted.

"The government is yet to provide PPEs for doctors and make test kits affordable for the common man. Without telling the nation what concrete steps are being taken to combat COVID-19 menace, the prime minister is giving meaningless tasks to an already exhausted population," he tweeted.

"It is shameful to convert the national crisis into an event of self aggrandizement & it is beyond shameful to push the hidden agenda of his party in the face of global calamity. May sense prevail upon the PM," the JDS leader said in another tweet.

Amid a nationwide COVID-19 lockdown, Prime Minister Modi on Friday appealed to countrymen to light diyas and candles on April 5 at 9 pm to fight the darkness spread by the pandemic. He asked the people to turn off all the lights in their homes and stand at doors or balconies and light candles or diyas, torches or mobile flashlights for 9 minutes on April 5.

Last month, PM Modi had asked the people to come out in their balconies and clap and beat utensils to show appreciation for doctors, nurses and others helping fight coronavirus on 'Janata Curfew'.

Pakistani roommate striving for release of Udupi man arrested in Saudi over offensive Facebook post

Dammam, Feb 3: Harish Bangera, 32, who was arrested in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia more than a month ago after offensive Facebook post went viral, has remained incommunicado.

Bangera, who hails from Goyadibettu in Bijadi village of Kundapur taluk, Udupi district, was an air-conditioning technician for a company in Dammam, capital of Saudi's eastern province.

He was arrested on December 20, 2019 after he posted derogatory messages on Facebook against crown prince Mohammad bin Salman and went on to claim that a Ram temple will be built in the holy city of Makkah too just like in Ayodhya where the Babri mosque was demolished.

Fearing legal action, he later posted a video pleading for forgiveness. “I have committed a mistake. Please forgive me. I will never upload any such posts again," he is seen saying in the video.

After his arrest, his roommate, who happens to be a Pakistani, has reportedly made several attempt to contact him, but in vain. He also has approached many Indian and Saudi authorities in his bid to get Bangera out of prison, sources said.

The Saudi authorities have not even responded to the messages of Indian Ministry of External Affairs. "We've made many efforts to contact the Saudi authorities but they haven't responded,” MEA sources said.
