Shri Kshethra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project wins Green Oscars

Mangalore, June 1: The Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP) has won Ashden Awards, popularly known as Green Oscars for helping poor people invest in renewable energy projects.

Dr D Veerendra Heggade, President of SKDRDP, received the awards and a cash prize of 40,000 pounds from Dr Kandeh Yumkella, Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation at a glittering function held at The Royal Geographical Society in London Wednesday night in the presence of the Foundation patron, The Prince of Wales.

Heggade said the project was started 29 years ago and receiving the Ashden Gold Award is a great step in recognising that poor people need financial services to acquire sustainable energy assets.

"This award will redefine the scope of microcredit." "Our effort is to convince people to save energy and go for alternative energy sources. The organisation is also supporting construction of toilets for rural people in Karnataka."

"Slowly we are tempted to go beyond the Karnataka borders as a model programme for others."

The SKDRDP promotes development through a network of 169,000 self-help-groups which now includes 1.8 million families, about 20 per cent of rural households in Karnataka.

The programme provides advice and information to help group members make long-term plans for their household needs and to save money.

It also provides loans for domestic and agricultural expenses, through one of the largest micro-credit programmes in India.

Sarah Butler-Sloss, founder Director of Ashden said: "In this uncertain world our winners offer a beacon of hope, showing that access to sustainable energy offers a clear route out of poverty for millions of people around the world. We're committed to sharing the lessons they have learnt so they can be replicated far and wide."

According to a press release, SKDRDP was selected for the green energy award because of the impressive role it had played in boosting microfinance organisations intended to meet the energy needs of the poor.

Bengaluru, May 5: The movement of migrant labourers from Karnataka to other states has stopped temporarily, as few North Indian states are yet to give consent.

Revenue Minister R Ashok said that the state government will convince labourers to stay back and ensure free food supply at their camps. "Even if we allow them to travel, they will be quarantined for 14 days as soon as they reach their native states.

The labourers don't know about this and some states have not yet given permission for their return," Revenue Minister R Ashok said.

According to sources in CMO, the decision to convince the workers to stay back came after several major projects - both government and private - were affected by the mass migration of labourers to their native districts and states.

Ashok, along with S Suresh Kumar, Primary and Secondary Education minister and head of the group of ministers focusing on migrant workers, also visited labourers who had gathered demanding that they be allowed to return.

Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa will chair a meeting tomorrow and instruct builders under CREDAI to pay pending wages of labourers, provide food supply and ensure their safety, Ashok said, adding that all construction work by BBMP will also be taken up to help the labourers.

Bengaluru,  Aug 1: As many as 5,172 new COVID-19 cases and 98 deaths were reported in Karnataka on Saturday, taking the state's count of coronavirus cases to 1,29,287.

The active cases in the state now stand at 73,219 while 53,648 people have been discharged.

"5,172 new COVID-19 cases and 98 deaths reported in Karnataka in the last 24 hours, taking total cases to 1,29,287 including 53,648 discharges and 2,412 deaths. The number of active cases stands at 73,219," said State Health Department.

So far, a total of 2,412 people have died in the state.

India, on Saturday, reported 57,117 new COVID-19 cases, taking the country's coronavirus tally to 16,95,988, said the Union Health Ministry.

Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 7: Making a scathing attack on the Central government, Kerala Finance Minister Thomas Issac on Friday said the BJP-led NDA government was "strangulating" the southern state by denying funds.

Presenting the 2020-21 budget of the Pinarayi Vijayan led-LDF government, he alleged the centre has been "helping" corporates rather that the common man.

"The Centre has been strangulating Kerala by denying funds for the state and has been moving on a self-destructive path by corporate-friendly policies and privatisation. The GST implementation has not been beneficial for the state," he said.

"The government proposes 2.5 lakh water connections in the upcoming financial year. We will also construct one lakh houses under Life Mission," the finance minister said.

The budget has allocated Rs 90 crore for Pravasi Welfare Fund and the government proposes power projects with a capacity of 500 MW.

"The government proposes Kochi development plan with a fund of Rs 6,000 crore. The city will get an unified travel card and Metro project will be extended," Issac said.

The state government has increased all welfare pension funds by Rs 100, allotted Rs 40 crore to paddy farmers and Rs 10 crore for startups in the state.

The local self-governments have been allotted Rs five crore for waste management, Rs 20 crore has been set apart for 1,000 food stalls under hunger-free Kerala, where meals will be made available at Rs 25.
