Seminar on George Fernandes on Jun 4

Mangalore, June 2: A seminar on George Fernandes is being organized by George Fernandes Vichara Vedike, Mangalore, on June 4 at Townhall in Mangalore.

Addressing media persons at Press Club in the city on Saturday, Dharmendra T, President, George Fernandes Vichara Vedike, Mangalore, said that people close to Mr. Fernandes will shed light on his life on the occasion.

A Srinivas Rao, Vice President, Srinivas Group of Colleges, Jayaram Shrian, Editor, Issues and Concerns, H K Balasoori, writer-journalist, and R L Dais, President, Railway Yatri Sangha, Udupi, will share their thoughts on the occasion, Mr. Dharmendra said.

Yogish Bhat, Deputy Speaker, Karnataka Legislative Assembly, N Vinay Hegde, President, Nitte Educational Trust, J J V Fernandes, advocate and relative of Mr. George Fernandes, S P Chengappa, President, Mangalore Bar Council are among the many guests who are expected to participate in the event.

As part of Mr. Fernandes' birthday celebrations, the Vedike will distribute sweets in children's wards of Wenlock and other hospitals in the city, he added.

Udupi's veteran politician commits suicide

Udupi, Feb 29: Senior Congress leader and Udupi’s crackers trader K Krishnaraja Saralaya allegedly committed suicide by jumping into a well outside his house at Paniyadi on Saturday.

He was 87, Krishnaraja was leading a solitary life. It is suspected that he ended his life ''due to mental agony''.

He is survived by two daughters. One is settled in Australia another is in Bengaluru. Saralaya had also served as President of Udupi Town Co-operative Society. The police visited the spot .

Karnataka reports 6,128 new COVID-19 cases, 83 deaths

Bengaluru, Jul 30: Karnataka reported 83 deaths and 6,128 new cases in the state on Thursday. With this, the total number of cases in the state stood at 1,18,632, the state health ministry said.

Currently, there are 69,700 active cases, while a total of 2,230 people have lost their lives due to the pandemic till now.

There are 15,83,792 confirmed cases across the country. Of them, 5,28,242 cases remain active. While 10,20,582 have recovered, 34,968 patients have lost their lives due to the pandemic.

Saudi Kannadigas charter flight from Dammam lands in Mangaluru

Mangaluru, June 22: A chartered flight from Dammam with more than 170 stranded Saudi Kannadiga passengers landed at Mangaluru International Airport at 8.53 pm.

The flight was chartered by Saudi Kannadigas Humanity Forum (SKHF), an unregistered NGO, which was formed recently to help the Kannadigas stranded in Saudi Arabia due to covid-19 lockdown under the leadership of Zakariya Jokatte, president of Jubail unit of Bearys Chamber of Commerce and Industry and KS Sheikh Karnire, Director of Expertise Contracting Co. Ltd, Saudi Arabia.

There were 165 adults and 8 infants on board the IndiGo flight. All the passengers were screened at the airport. They will be dispatched to quarantine centres after completing formalities.

SKHF had launched an online portal to assist those who were in need of emergency repatriation such as elderly people, those who lost their jobs, pregnant women and those who are in need of emergency medical treatment back home in India.

SKHF coordinated with the authorities concerned to carry out all the formalities and legal procedures in Saudi Arabia. SKHF members were present at the Dammam Airport to help the passengers during the departure.

Mr Jokatte and Mr Sheikh have thanked U T Khader, Mangaluru MLA and Dr Arathi Krishna, former deputy chairperson of NRI forum of government of Karnataka, for their help in chartering the flight.
