Divide between science, engineering and humanities must be bridged'

Mangalore, June 2: Compartmentalisation of learning is contrary to the very basis of a university, said Prof. P Balaram, Director, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.

Delivering the Graduation Day Address on the occasion of the Second Graduation Ceremony of St Aloysius College (Autonomous), Mangalore, on June 2, Prof. Balram said that in the past, disciplinary boundaries were much less pronounced. “Micheal Faraday was a physicist, chemist, and an electrical engineer. Similarly, Louis Pasteur was an organic chemist, a microbiologist, and a biotechnologist. India's own J C Bose was a physicist, biologist, physiologist and inventor, but these terms were much less defined in his time”, he said.

Prof. Balaram also said that the trend of students preferring commerce and management streams over humanities and science subjects was a matter of concern. “Some courses are labeled as 'professional', a term which suggests rather curiously, that B.Sc and B.A courses are 'unprofessional'. It is this divide between science, engineering, medicine and humanities which must be bridged in India today”, he said.

A total of 1,377 students obtained their degree certificates on the occasion, including 872 in the under graduate section, 460 in the post graduate section and 45 in PG Diploma.

Rank holders from different courses were honoured with medals and cash prizes.

Fr. Joseph Rodrigues, Rector, St Aloysius Institutions, administered the oath to the students.

Fr. Francis Serrao, Provincial, Karnataka Jesuit Province, Fr. Swebert D'Silva, Principal, St. Aloysius College, Mangalore, Prof. A M Narahari, Registrar of the College, were among the dignitaries present on the occasion.

Bengaluru, Jul 2: Senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge said that the "RSS needs to be defeated to save the country" and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah are "destroying the nation".

Kharge was speaking at a KPCC program where DK Shivakumar took charge as state Congress president.

He said that the Prime Minister and the Home Minister are not ready to take accountability for any issues including China, and are instead blaming Rajiv Gandhi Foundation of getting funds from China.

"Rajiv Gandhi foundation utilized funds for the development of the nation and for the betterment of the downtrodden people," Kharge said.

"Prime Minister Modi and Shah both are destroying the economy of the nation, and their policies and plans are the reason for increasing COVID-19 situation in India," he said.

"Prime Minister and Amit Shah never listen to Opposition parties, instead they plan something and their policies are the reason for MSME losses and job losses in the country," he added.

Mangaluru, Jan 31: The Pumpwell flyover, part of the four-laning of Talapady-Kundapura stretch of National Highway 66, was finally inaugurated today.

Work on four-laning NH 66 between Talapady-Kundapur, excluding the Nanthoor-NITK Surathkal stretch, started in September 2010 and Pumpwell (Mahaveera Circle) flyover was a part of the project. Concessionnaire M/s Navayuga Udupi Tollway Pvt., Ltd., failed to execute many flyovers on the stretch within the prescribed time, including Thokkottu and Pumpwell in Mangaluru, Karavali Circle in Udupi, and Shasri Circle in Kundapur.

Thokkottu and Karavali Circle flyovers are complete now while Shastri Circle flyover as well as the four-lane road within Kundapur town are still incomplete. Similarly, a small bridge and portion of the road in Padubidri too is yet to be completed.

MLA Vedavayas Kamath, MLA Bharath Shetty were also present on the occasion.

Mangaluru, JuJ 2: Dr Shivaram Karanth Biological Park at Pilikula, which was recently reopened after covid-19 lockdown, will again be shut from July 4 to 31. 

“The authorities have decided to close the park for visitors from July 4 to July 31 due to the rapid increase of the spread of coronavirus in Dakshina Kannada,” said, Jayaprakash Bhandary, director of the Park.

Mr Bhandary said that after the reopening of the Park, the number of visitors has drastically decreased due to corona scare. 

“There are around 100 staff and over 30 caretakers at the zoo. After closing the zoo, only essential staff will come to the zoo take care of the animals. We are planning to reopen it for visitors on August 1,” he said.
