DK, Udupi gear up for Sunday's Council polls

Mangalore/Udupi, June 8: With just two days to go, the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district administration have geared up for elections to the Legislative Council from South-West Graduates' and Teachers' Constituencies.

Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner N.S. Channappa Gowda, who is the Assistant Returning Officer, has said that all arrangements have been made for the smooth polling across district between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm on Sunday June 10.

He told media persons on Thursday that there were 11,859 eligible voters and 20 polling stations in Dakshina Kannada under the South-West Graduates' Constituency. Mangalore taluk had 6,640 voters, Bantwal 1,389 voters, Belthangady 1,178 voters, Puttur 1,545 voters, and Sullia taluk 1,107 voters.

Mr. Gowda said there were 4,902 eligible voters and 14 polling stations in Dakshina Kannada under South West Teachers' Constituency. The taluk-wise break-up of voters is as follows: Mangalore taluk (2,863), Bantwal (480), Belthangady (530), Puttur (586), Sullia (443).

The counting of votes would take place on June 13, he said.

Meanwhile the Udupi District Administration will be setting up 10 booths for South-West Graduates Constituency and nine booths for South-West Teachers Constituency.

Udupi Deputy Commissioner M T Reju told media persons that the polling would be held from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm on Sunday. There are 6,134 voters for the South-West Graduates Constituency, and 2,061 voters for the South-West Teachers Constituency in the district, Mr. Reju said.

Bengaluru, June 29: The Karnataka government on Monday issued guidelines to conduct online classes for all students of ICSE, CBSE and SSLC under the directions of the High Court.

According to the guidelines, for the kindergarten students, online classes can be held 30 minutes a week and students in classes 1-5 will have online classes for 30-45 minutes divided into two periods for three alternate days every week.

For students in classes 6-8, the online classes will be for 30-45 minutes divided into two periods for five days every week while students in classes 9 and 10 can have the virtual classes for 30-45 minutes divided into four periods for five days a week.

Earlier, the state government barred online classes for the kids from LKG to class 5.

Minister for primary and secondary education S Suresh Kumar had said that online classes cannot be held for the kids from LKG to class V.

Bengaluru, Aug 8: Former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Saturday demanded that the state government drop its plan to provide doorstep delivery of liquor.

"After faltering in mopping up revenue, the state government is mulling over allowing doorstep delivery of liquor by enabling online sales and starting new MSIL liquor shops in rural areas. I demand that the state government drop its plans," he tweeted.

"I came to know that the excise commissioner is keen to hold talks with a private firm to enable online sale of liquor. The government should back out from such a foolish decision. Otherwise, agitation is inevitable," Kumaraswamy said.

He said opening new liquor shops or online delivery will ruin the health of society.

"Post-COVID outbreak and subsequent lockdown, people are facing financial distress, struggling to lead day-to-day life. 

The government must withdraw such an imprudent decision to deliver liquor at doorsteps. Opening new liquor shops or the decision of online delivery in times of distress like this will spoil society's health. 

It is not fair for the government to fill its coffers by robbing people's money," he said in a series of tweets.

Bengaluru, Apr 1: The Opposition Congress leader in the Karnataka Assembly, and former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has appealed the party legislators and MPs to contribute a minimum rupees one lakh each, towards the KPCC's Corona relief fund.

In a statement, here on Tuesday, Siddaramaiah had stated that the COVID-19 disease had created a havoc among the people of the state, and had thrown thousands of people jobless and struggling to get access to the food grains as well as to medical aid.

The people of the state, who had battered from the unprecedented rains and floods recently, had to face another daunting challenge of the spread of COVID-19 virus across the state.
