Kasargod, June 9: The Kasargod district, with its picturesque hills and vast stretch of costal belt, could be turned into a tourism hotspot, opined Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President Ramesh Chennithala.

Inaugurating a development seminar hosted by the District Congress Committee at the municipal conference hall here on Friday, he said Northern Kerala has immense potential to emerge as an investment friendly region, if basic infrastructure is improved.

However, the district remained backward because of the authorities' failure in implementing the sanctioned schemes, he lamented. “The attitude needs to be changed. A sizeable number of people migrate to other States or abroad to get gainful employment,” he said.

Referring to the Central University of Kerala (CUK) coming up at Periye in the district, he said Union Human Resources Development Minister Kapil Sibal had agreed to lay the foundation stone of the institution on July 21.

He said he would recommend setting up of a mobile Triveni outlet in Kasaragod Assembly segment so that essential goods would be available at affordable prices. Similar arrangements would be extended to other four Assembly segments in the district.

The KPCC president said a draft report compiled from the day-long seminar would be handed over to the P. Prabhakaran Commission, appointed by the government to study the development requirements of the district.

DCC president K. Velunthambu presided over the function which was attended by N.A. Nellikunnu and P.B. Abdul Razak, MLAs from Kasaragod and Manjeshwaram.

KPCC executive members P. Gangadharan Nair, M.C. Jose, C. K. Sreedharan, and M. Narayanan Kutty also addressed the function.

“Bid to scuttle probe”

Later, Speaking to media persons on the sidelines of the programme, Mr Chennithala accused the Communist Party of India-Marxist of diverting the ongoing police inquiry into the murder of Revolutionary Marxist Party (RMP) leader T.P. Chandrasekharan.

He asked the party whether it was prepared to denounce its politics of violence in the wake of the revelations that pointed an accusing finger at the role of the CPI(M) in the murder case.

“The CPI(M) appears to be nervous about the outcome of the ongoing probe into the RMP leader's murder,” he said, alleging that the party was trying to scuttle the probe by threatening police officials and media persons.

To a query on the move to shift crucial institutions coming under the Central University of Kerala (CUK) to elsewhere in the State, he said such reports were baseless.

He said the medical college proposed under the CUK would be set up in Kasaragod, where hundreds were suffering from mysterious diseases attributed to endosulfan pesticide sprayed on the Plantation Corporation of Kerala's cashew estates.

Bengaluru, Jul 26: Paying tributes to the martyrs of Kargil war on its 21st anniversary, Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Sunday said his government always stood by the soldiers and families of those who laid down their lives to protect the borders of the country.

"The government is always committed to the welfare of the soldiers. Karnataka has formed a separate department for the welfare of the soldiers and their families. We always stand with the families of the martyred soldiers," he said. He was addressing soldiers after paying tributes to the martyrs of the Kargil war at an official function organised on the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas at the National Military Memorial Park in the city by the Sainik Welfare and Resettlement Department under the state Home Department.

Yediyurappa described as a symbol of India's valour and sacrifices the Kargil Vijay Diwas, observed to commemorate its victory over Pakistan in the war that ended on July 26, 1999 with recapture of the territory in Kargil. He said the state government has given due compensation to the families of the Kargil martyrs and the soldiers who were injured.

Recalling the conflict, Yediyurappa said Pakistan had set its eyes on grabbing the vast terrains of Kargil and Drass sector in Jammu and Kashmir but the Indian soldiers successfully fought a deadly battle at a height of 17,000 feet where the temperature goes up to minus 30 degrees celsius.

"The sacrifices of our soldiers will remain etched in our memories forever. The tale of the 527 soldiers, who sacrificed their lives to save our country, is a constant source of inspiration for our youth," the Chief Minister said. He also noted Karnataka's contributions to the Indian army and said the state had given two Generals, one Field Marshall, many army officers and innumerable soldiers to protect the country's borders.

Bengaluru, Jun 22: The Central Crime Branch (CCB) of Bengaluru Police has obtained the custody of an associate of gangster Ravi Pujari and is questioning him about his role in several cases against the gangster, the police said on Monday.

According to the police, Khan is convicted in the case related to the murder of a builder named Subba Rao in the year 2017. The accused has been identified as Yousuf Bacha Khan.

"Continuing the investigation of Ravi Poojary, CCB had obtained custody of Yousuf Bacha Khan, who is associate of Pujari. Khan was convicted in the Subba Rao murder case. He is being questioned about his role in other cases," Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sandeep Patil said.

The CCB had recently filed two charge sheets against gangster Ravi Pujari in Shabnam developers double murder case and an extortion case.

Pujari, who was wanted in several cases including ones related to heinous crimes like murder and extortion, was extradited to Bengaluru earlier this year from Senegal.

The gangster, who parted ways with underworld don Chhota Rajan, had jumped bail after he was arrested in Senegal in 2019 and had escaped to South Africa, where he was involved in drug trafficking and extortion.

According to sources in the Indian intelligence, Ravi Pujari was hiding under the false identity of Anthony Fernandes, a Burkina Faso passport holder, in a remote village in South Africa.

Mumbai, Feb 26: Targetting Shiv Sena's silence over the recent controversial remark by AIMIM leader Waris Pathan, former Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday said the Uddhav Thackeray-led party might be "wearing bangles" but the BJP was not and knew how to retaliate in the same manner.

"Shiv Sena might be wearing bangles but we are not. If someone says something then he will be given an answer in the same way. BJP has this much power," said Fadnavis while launching a scathing attack on ruling-Shiv Sena in Maharashtra for not taking strict action against Pathan.

Fadnavis was addressing protestors at Azad Maidan where BJP launched a protest against Maharashtra government over issues related to farmers and women.

On February 20, while addressing an anti-CAA rally, at Kalaburagi in Karnataka, Pathan had said, "time has now come for us to unite and achieve freedom. Remember we are 15 crore but can dominate over 100 crores."

"They tell us that we have kept our women in the front - only the lionesses have come out and you are already sweating. You can understand what would happen if all of us come together," he had said.

Facing flak over his remarks Pathan later took back his words and had said he had not targeted any community but had spoken against members of some organisations.

"If any of my words have hurt someone, I take them back as I am a true Indian," Pathan said at a press conference here.

The AIMIM leader said that he was being portrayed as being anti-Indian and anti-Hindu for the past couple of days.

"I want to say that my earlier statement was basically against people who are members of organisations like RSS, BJP, Bajrang Dal, etc. These 100 are those people who want to divide this beautiful nation," he added.
