Colleges must solve students' career dilemmas'

Mangalore, June 11: Pre University colleges must teach students in such a way that the conflict within their mind as to what they have to become in the future is solved in those two years itself, said Dr. Shantaram Shetty, Vice Chancellor of Nitte University.

Speaking at the formal inauguration programme of Vikas PU College, Mangalore, at Townhall in the city on Monday, Mr. Shetty said that education must not be confined to mere scoring of marks. Stating that Mangalore has now become the Boston of India with the number of educational institutions that it possesses, Mr. Shetty said that colleges must teach ethical values to students. They need to be taught how dangerous greed and corruption are, he said.

Gopal Hosur, IGP (Intelligence), in his address recalled his association with Mangalore and how the city's Expert Coaching Centre had played a role in enhancing the academic performance of his son. Appealing the parents to not be too possessive about their children, Mr. Hosur said that often it so happens that children start finding parents irritating because of the pressure being exerted on them to score good marks. Stating that about 35% of India's population comprises of children below 15 years, Mr. Hosur said that if proper education and orientation is not given to them, the same bunch of children would become a problem for the country.

Nayak, Secretary, Chairman of Expert Educational and Charitable Foundation, Mangalore, Krishna J Palemar, MLA, Dr Kaverappa, Former Vice Chancellor, Mangalore University, were among the dignitaries present on the occasion.

Bengaluru, Aug 9: A youth was killed and three others injured as a pillar of an old temple on the outskirts of Bengaluru fell on them as they and five others dug under it in search of treasure, police said on Saturday.

"One treasure hunter got crushed under a pillar, three suffered injuries and have been hospitalised while five are on the run," a police official said.

The incident occurred at a centuries-old Anjaneya temple in Hindiganala village near Hoskote, around 50 km away from the city, on Thursday night.

Suresh, 23, got crushed to death while Manjunath, 23, Srinivas, 22, and Sebastian Raja Rathna, 22, were injured.

Following the unexpected accident, the injured treasure hunters called a 108 ambulance, leading to the entire incident coming to light.

The ambulance staff helped the youth stuck under the temple pillars and took them to hospital.

Police have registered a case under various sections of the Ancient Monuments Act, the Karnataka Treasure Trove Act, and the Indian Penal Code.

According to the official, local youth the village as well as a nearby village were involved in the hunt.

Police are on the lookout for the five treasure hunters on the run.

However, the police official said that it was an old ruined temple and there was nothing there.

Gadag, Feb 20: A 33-year-old Muslim man is all set to become a seer at Muruga Rajendra Mutt in Gadag.

Ordained by Sri Murugarajendra Koraneswara Swami of the mutt, Dewan Sharief Mullah claims he was taking the step not under any duress but after being "guided by the almighty".

"Nobody asked me to do it. The almighty came in my mind and guided me.... They have put the sacred thread and given me the responsibility. They have given me the 'Ishta-linga' and this honour. I have done the 'Ishta-linga dharan'. I will walk on the path of dharma. Love and sacrifice is the message given to me. That is what I want to propagate," he said.

Sri Murugarajendra Koraneswara Swami said, "It does not matter what caste you belong to. If God appears to you for a path of goodwill and sacrifice, you will do it regardless of the manmade restrictions of birth and caste."

Bengaluru, Aug 4 : Without mentioning any party leader's name, Karnataka Congress President DK Shivakumar on Monday appealed to Congress workers not to make any "defamatory statement" against any political leader on social media platforms.

Taking to Twitter, Shivakumar wrote, "I appeal to Congress workers not to make defamatory statements against any political leader, on matters of health and other issues on social media platforms. It is not in our culture to wish bad for others. Congress is a party that exemplifies brotherhood and humanity."

His statement comes days after Rajya Sabha MP and AICC in-charge for Gujarat, Rajiv Satav comment where he suggested that introspection in the party should begin from the time of the United Progressive Alliance -II government.

Later, Satav took to Twitter to clarify his remarks at Thursday's meeting of the party's Upper House MPs. Satav, through a series of tweets on Saturday, said he was not comfortable discussing what goes on inside party meetings in forums outside.
