SHRC chairman asks DC to inspect villages affected by UPCL pollution

Udupi, June 11: S.R. Nayak, Chairman of the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) on Monday directed the Udupi District Deputy Commissioner to visit the villages affected by the alleged pollution of the coal-based thermal plant of Udupi Power Corporation Ltd (UPCL) within a week.


He was speaking at a meeting after receiving petitions from the public here.


Shashidhar Shetty, former President of Yellur Gram Panchayat, during his deposition drew the attention of Mr. Nayak about the difficulties faced by people in 10 villages due to the pollution from the UPCL for the last two years. He said the coal was not properly stored in the plant and the discharge of effluent from the plant had contaminated the wells and destroyed agricultural crops. The fly-ash from the plant had caused health problems among the children and the elderly.


He also urged the SHRC to visit the pollution- affected villages.


Mr. Shetty also presented the samples of contaminated water in two bottles to the SHRC chairman.


Reacting to the plea, Mr. Nayak said the potable water was a matter connected to right to live. Contaminated water violated the right to health of the people, he said.


Bharat Kumar of Yermal village aslo drew the attention of the SHRC on the ill-effects of the project. Deputy Commissioner Dr. R.T. Reju was not present at the meeting as he was in Mysore on official duty.

Hubbali, Mar 21: South Western Railway suspended an employee on Thursday, for allegedly hiding her son's travel history who returned from Spain. The employee's son has now been kept under isolation.

Earlier it was reported that the man had a travel history of Italy- among the worst affected countries by Coronavirus.

He was working in Germany and had taken a flight from Spain to return to India.

In an order issued by General Manager of South Western Railway, the employee was further asked to leave the headquarter without obtaining permission from the competent authority.

The suspended Railway Officer is posted in Bengaluru.
According to the official data, the total number of Covid-19 cases in India has risen to 206, according to ICMR. Timely diagnosis and isolation have been considered vital to check the spread of the deadly disease.

Bengaluru, Feb 23: Union Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers DV Sadananda Gowda on Sunday said that several "anti-national organisations" were misusing the platform of anti-CAA protests.

"We have taken serious note of it and have started an investigation. Several anti-national organisations are misusing the platform of anti-CAA protests and many people are trying to take political advantage of this situation," he told the media on Sunday.

Gowda said that the government is "very serious" about the issue. "We are already working towards this. Both the state and Centre are together investigating into this," he said and added, "We will ensure that we cut this and will not allow this to grow. We will investigate the organisers of the event as well."

"If you are inviting such people (alleged anti-national elements), it means that you either know about it or that you are indirectly encouraging such things. In such situations, the organisers too will be acted upon," he stressed.

Mandya, July 30: BJP state president Nalin Kumar Kateel on Wednesday said Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa has done a commendable job in tackling the Covid-19 situation and floods and that the question of changing the leadership does not arise.

Karnataka on Wednesday reported 5,503 new cases of Covid-19 and 92 related fatalities, taking the total number of infections to 1,12,504 and the death toll to 2,147.

Speaking to reporters here, Kateel said, "Deputy Chief Minister Laxman Savadi has gone to Delhi to discuss the projects sanctioned to state with the central minister. There is no need to read too much into it."

Replying to a query on graft charges against the BSY government by the Congress, Kateel said, "Congress national president, state unit president are out on bail in graft cases . Why did a Congress leader who calls himself a bande (rock) has approached court seeking stay on CBI probe? Before making any allegations against the government, they should think about 'irregularities' in Indira Canteen and housing schemes," he charged.

Instead of instilling confidence and hope among the people in these testing times, the Congress is unnecessarily creating fear with petty politics, he told reporters in Shravanabelagola, Hassan district.

"The Yediyurappa-led BJP government is working day and night to tackle the Covid-19. Similarly, several non-governmental organisations have joined hands with the government in the fight against the virus. But, the Congress is only creating confusion by issuing baseless statements," Kateel said.
