BJP workers rejoice as Shankaramurthy, Karnik win Council poll

Mangalore, June 13: Bharatiya Janata Party activists in the city erupted in joy on Wednesday as their candidates D H Shankaramurthy and Ganesh Karnik were declared winners in the recently held elections to the Legislative Council.

Mr Shankaramurthy was elected to Legsilative Council from graduates constituency for the fifth time while Capt Ganesh Karnik was elected for the second time.

However, both of them could not reach the target (quota) in their respective constituencies. While Mr?Shankaramurthy polled 13,926 votes, S?P?Dinesh (Cong) managed to secure 10,140 votes and S?L?Bhoje Gowda (JDS) secured only 6,875 votes. Similarly, in the Teachers' constituency, Capt Ganesh Karnik (BJP)?polled 4,139 votes, Hosur Ramesh Joyappa (Cong) managed to secure only 627 votes.

Independent candidate K?K?Manjunath Kumar gave a tough competition to Karnik by securing 3,393 votes. The quota for graduates constituency was 14,066 votes while the quota for teachers' constituency was 4,558 votes. Both the winners could not achieve the desired quota.

The results were announces on Wednesday afternoon a couple of hours after the counting was started at Mysore. Polling for three Graduates' and three Teachers' Constituencies had taken place in the state last Sunday.

Soon after the results were announced the BJP workers celebrated 'Vijayotsav' in front of their party office in the city. Deputy Speaker of Legislative Assembly N Yogish Bhat was also present.

Udupi, Jun 28: A student appearing for the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) exams in Kaup taluk of Udupi district has tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) infection.

Officials of the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) and Udupi District Health and Family Welfare Department have confirmed the report. 

The 16-year-old girl had appeared for the Kannada and Mathematics exams on June 25 and 27 respectively. 

Her throat swabs were sent for testing on June 27 after her father tested covid-19 positive. Today she too obtained positive report.  

The student is unlikely to appear for the science paper on June 29.

Meanwhile, health officers have ruled out the possibility of subjecting other students to covid-19 test as all necessary precautions such as physical distancing and usage of sanitization were taken in the examination centre.

Mangaluru, May 21: The coastal district of Dakshina Kannada today recorded six fresh covid-19 positive cases. With this the total cases reported in the district so far rose to 61.

It is learnt that all the six new covid-19 patients are those who had returned to Mangaluru from Dubai on May 18. 

Al the six patients are male. Among them two people aged 44 years and three others aged 35, 42, 60 are residents of Dakshina Kannada. Another one is 29-year-old from Kalaburagi. 

They were under institutional quarantine after their return. After their throat swab tests confirmed the disease, they were shifted to covid-19 hospital in the city.

Chikkamagaluru, May 4: KSRTC resumed its service from Chikkamagaluru district headquarters to taluk centres amidst the lockdown to contain COVID-19 on Monday. Chikkamagaluru is in the green zone.

Hundreds of passengers travelled to Sringeri, Mudigere, Koppa and Kadur taluks since morning from the Chikkamagaluru city.

According to KSRTC Divisional Controller, passengers who wish to travel to taluk centres have to register half an hour prior to the journey. 

Sanitisers were placed in the bus stand in Chikkamagaluru to sanitise hands before boarding the buses.
