Increase GER in higher education to promote economic growth'

Udupi, June 17: The Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) of students in higher education sector should be increased as it would promote the economic growth of the country, said Mangalore University Vice-Chancellor Prof T C Shivashankara Murthy.

He was speaking at the Graduation Day ceremony of NMAM Institute of Technology (NMAMIT) at Nitte, here on Saturday.

Prof. Murthy said GER in higher education was 12.6 per cent now. Nearly 14.6 million students in the age group of 18 to 24 had been enrolled in colleges across the country. The country aimed at increasing it to 30 per cent by 2025, he said.

He said GER in Canada was 82 per cent and in the United States, it was 80. If India could achieve a GER of 25 to 30 per cent by 2025, it would have skilled manpower not only to meet its requirement but also contribute workforce to countries in the West.

Chancellor of Nitte University N. Vinay Hegde felicitated the toppers in various courses with gold medals. Principal S.Y. Kulkarni and vice-principal Niranjan Chiplunkar were present.

Bengaluru, Apr 16: The Union Health Ministry on Wednesday has identified eight districts from Karnataka as COVID-19 hotspots.

Districts that have reported a higher number of cases are classified as hotspots, the districts where cases have been reported as non-hotspots, and green zones where no cases have been reported.

Bangalore Urban, Mysuru, Belagavi, Dakshina Kannada, Bidar, Kalaburgi, Bagalokote and Dharwad have been identified as Covid-19 hotspots by Union Health Ministry, tweeted the state health department on Wednesday.

Mangaluru, Jul 31: Muslims across coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada today observed Eid al Adha following the safety guidelines issued by the government amidst covid-19 pandemic. 

While coastal Karnataka is celebrating the festival of sacrifice today, it will be observed in other parts of Karnataka and country tomorrow. 

Congregational Eid prayers were held in many mosques while ensuring physical distancing norms. Only 50 devotees were allowed in mosques. Children below 10 years of age and elders above 60 years of age weren’t allowed. 

Eidgahs in the region wore a deserted look as the government has temporarily prohibited prayers in the open grounds. The Eidgah at Lighthouse Hill in Mangaluru, which usually witnessed huge crowd during Eid celebrations, was also closed this time. 

As expected, the celebration this time was a low key thanks to the restrictions placed in tune with the threat of coronavirus infection.

Prayers were held in Kudroli’s Nadupalli and Bundar’s Zeenat Bakhsh Central mosque. All those who entered mosque were wearing masks. 

In Udupi city, Eid prayers were held at Jamia Masjid and other mosques with limited number of devotees. In Bhatkal took some of the mosques hosted Eid prayers with all precautionary measures.

Mangaluru, May 22: There will be complete lockdown in Dakshina Kananda from 7 p.m. on Saturday (May 23) to 7 a.m. on Monday (May 25). 

Announcing this today, Deputy commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh clarified that there would be no restrictions on sale of newspapers, vegetables, fish, meat, milk and medicine.

Other shops, hotels and bars will remain closed. Movement of private vehicles also banned during this period.

Under lockdown period, people are instructed to stay indoors and all non-essential activities are restricted. 

Under coronavirus lockdown, people can step out only for essential activities like medical supplies, grocery shopping, and hospital appointments.

Wedding with permission

If marriages have been scheduled already on Sunday, they will be considered as a special case. However, prior permission is must for scheduled weddings, said the deputy commissioner.

Marriages can be permitted by ensuring social distancing, capping the number of guests at 50 and strict compliance with all other guidelines.

No AC, no consumption of liquor and paan, no invitation to people aged above 65 and below 10 and also pregnant women are some of the guidelines to be followed for holding marriages or events.

Containment zones 

In the corona containment zones that have been sealed no one can step out, only home delivery of essential services are allowed. Only movement of medical vehicles will be allowed and no one will be allowed to perform any other activity. No one will be allowed to step out of their home even for essential services. The govt may take legal action if anyone is seen out of their home.
