Kasargod, June 17: The special police team investigating the murder of Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) worker Abdul Shukkoor has asked Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) Kerala State Secretary and MLA T V Rajesh to appear before the investigating officers on July 1.

Mr. Rajesh was earlier served notice by Valapattanam Circle Inspector U. Preman to be present before the police team on June 17 to be questioned in connection with the murder case.

Communist Party of India (Marxist) district secretary P. Jayarajan had been quizzed by the police team for nearly two-and-a-half hours here on June 12. The investigators had then said that they had unearthed vital information regarding the conspiracy angle of the murder of the 21-year old IUML worker at Keezhara on February 20.

Though Mr. Rajesh had also been served notice asking him to appear before the team on June 17, the investigators postponed the date for collecting more details.

Meanwhile, a police team headed by Kannur Deputy Superintendent of Police P. Sukumaran questioned nine mediapersons based at Taliparamba on Saturday to collect details about the incidents on February 20, including the alleged attack on CPI(M) leader P. Jayarajan and Mr. Rajesh during their visit to Ariyil that day. The murder of Shukkoor was apparently in retaliation to the attack on the CPI(M) leader.

The police team has already arrested 25 CPI(M) workers in connection with the murder. In a bid to focus on the conspiracy part of the killing, the police team has started questioning more people, including local functionaries of the CPI(M). According to the police, the conspiracy to avenge the attack on party leaders had been hatched by some leaders at the Taliparamba Co-operative Hospital where Mr. Jayarajan and Mr. Rajesh had been admitted after the attack.

The murder of Shukkoor stood apart from political murders in the region as there was a gap of over two hours between his capture from a house by a group of CPI(M) worker and his killing. The police team found that the photos of the captured had been verified by some quarters before Shukkoor and his friend Zakaria had been taken to a field and stabbed.
