Speeding city bus kills pedestrian in Hampankatta

Mangalore, June 18: In a heartrending incident, a pedestrian was knocked down by a speeding city bus in the heart of the city on Monday.

The victim, aged 50-55 years, was killed on the spot after being hit by the bus at around 11:00 am, while walking on the sidewalk of the road near Hotel Roopa at Hampankatta.

The body was later shifted to the mortuary of Government Wenlock Hospital.

However, the identity of the deceased is yet to establish as none has approached the traffic police station to claim the body.

The accident occurred when the bus on route number 44-M, bearing registration number KA19 D6244 was heading towards Gramachavadi from State Bank bus terminus.

The police said that driver of the bus allegedly fled from the spot after the accident

The traffic police also appealed to citizens to contact the station if someone has any information about the deceased.

The Centre’s step-motherly attitude towards Kannadigas stranded in the Gulf countries in general and Saudi Arabia in particular has prompted the Kannadigas to resort social media campaign once again.

A couple of weeks ago, Twitterati had launched a campaigned to bring back Kannadidags stranded in Saudi Arabia. A variation of the hashtag #SaudiKannadigasNeedFlights trended today. 

Trend Setters India, which has taken the twitter campaign initiative, had urged the Kannadigas around the world to join the twitter storm at 4 p.m. IST on June 15, to exert pressure on the authorities concerned. Around 7 p.m. the hashtag began trending with thousands of tweets.

Millions of Kannadigas are working in Middle Eastern countries like Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates. They contribute greatly to the Indian economy.

Even though government of India has launched Vande Bharat Mission for the repatriation of Indians stranded across the world, it has operated only a few flights from Saudi Arabia to Karnataka so far. Thousands of Kannadigas including pregnant women, elderly people, those who have lost jobs and those who need emergency medical care are still waiting for repatriation flights from Saudi Arabia to Mangaluru and Bengaluru.

Bengaluru, Apr 10: Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, expressing his concern over the plight of stray animals struggling during lockdown, called upon people to feed the animals near their houses and provide them drinking water.

In a tweet he said "Due to scorching heat and Lockdown, cats, dogs and birds are suffering without water and food. In cities this situation much serious. So I appeal to people that people should see that dogs and birds their get food and water.

Please be kind and take some time off to feed stray animals and birds around your homes. Try providing them with water and leftovers so they're not parched and left hungry. Stray animals depend on wastes and leftovers from hotels and restaurants and have been hit by the Lockdown to check the spread of Corona virus.

New Delhi, July 29: The government of India today announced Unlock 3.0, lifting of night curfew from August 1 and opening of yoga institutes and gymnasiums from August 5 while educational institutes will remain closed throughout August.

According to the Unlock 3.0 guidelines issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the lockdown in containment zones will be extended until August 30. The new guidelines will be in effect from August 1.

The operation of Metro rail and international flights will remain suspended. Cinema halls, swimming pools, entertainment parks, theatres, bars, auditoriums, assembly halls and similar places will remain shut. Large gatherings are also prohibited.

Yoga institutes and gymnasiums will start operating from August 5 for which the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare will be issuing Standard Operating Procedures. 

Independence Day celebrations will be held with social distancing norms in place.

Restrictions on the movement of individuals during the night (Night curfew between 10 PM and 5 AM) have been removed.

According to the order, states have been given powers to prohibit certain activities outside containment zones or impose such restrictions as deemed necessary based on their assessment of the situation.

"However, there shall be no restriction on inter-state and intra-state movement of persons and goods. No separate permission/approval/e-permit will be required for such movements," the order said. 

In the previous two Unlock guidelines, the government had substantially opened various activities.
