Mangalore, June 19: Dakshina Kannada district police have nabbed eight interstate thieves who had been involved in several, theft, robbery and doctoity cases.
Superintendent of Police Abhishek Goyal told media persons at his office on Tuesday that the sleuths of District Crime and Intelligence Bureau have arrested a man in connection with serial theft cases under the limits of Puttur police station.
The accused is K R Santhanam alias Chandran alias Antony (47), hailing from nearby state of Kerala.
The police have seized 70 gram gold, one-and-a-half kg silver, a mobile phone, a laptop, a gold weighing machine, a gas cutter and an electric cutter from his possession. The value of the recovered goods is Rs 3.5 lakh.
Mr Goyal said that though Antony had undergone three years of imprisonment following his arrest by DCIB in 2003 in connection with temple thefts, the latter continued his criminal activities in the district. In 2010 and 2011 he was involved in 12 theft cases in Puttur taluk, he said.
Mr Goyal congratulated the Belthangady police for busting an interstate gang of dacoits two weeks ago.
A team of police from Belthangady station had arrested seven interstate dacoits, including three women at Charmadi Check post on May 30. They have been identified as Kavitha (28), Manjula Rathna (35), Sriniva alias Sheena (25), Ganesh (25), Saroja (44) and her two sons Basavaraju S (23) Lokesh N (24).
A Tata Safari worth Rs 10 lakh, a knife, two iron rods, chilly powder, mobile phones, an ATM card and a some cash also have been recovered from the gang members.
Mr Goyal said that the modus operandi of the gang was that they used to target affluent individuals in pilgrimage centres. In many cases they had threatened the targeted individuals using lethal weapons and decamped with the booty including gold ornaments.
