Moodbidri, June 21: In what can be termed as the height of brutality, a ruthless man hacked his wife to death, a day after she gave birth to a baby boy at a government hospital, here.

The incident occurred around 11:00 pm on Wednesday in front a crowd of horrified onlookers including patients and staff of the Community Health Centre.

24-year-old Jayanthi was resting in general ward along with her one-day-old baby, when 30-year-old Jayanth, who had married her just five months ago, barged in with a machete.

Jayanthi, daughter of Thodar Narayan and Rajeevi couple from Yedapadavu, was a five-month-pregnant, when her longtime lover Janyanth had tied the knot with her.

It is learnt that Jayanth had planned to desert Jayanthi after she became pregnant. However, police intervention had forced him to marry her.

Jayanth had spent his first two weeks of marital life in Jayanthi's house before securing a work in Mangalore. However the post marital relationship between the past-lovers continued to sour with each passing day.

On Wednesday, when Jayanath came to know that his wife gave birth to a baby previous day, he rushed to the hospital only to kill her and flee the scene. He threw the machete at the entrance gate.

The little baby, which miraculously survived the attack, has been admitted to a hospital in Mangalore with severe injuries. His condition is said to be critical.

The police have launched a man-hunt to nab the accused after registering a case.

New Delhi, Mar 20: An official of South Western Railway has been suspended for "hiding" her son, who returned from Germany and later tested positive for coronavirus.

The youth has been hiding at a railway guest house in Bengaluru, officials said on Friday.

"She (the railway official) not only failed to inform authorities about her son's return from Germany, but also endangered the lives of others by lodging him in a railway rest house near the main Bangalore railway station," railway spokesperson E Vijaya said.

The Assistant Personnel Officer (Traffic) has been suspended, Vijaya said.

The 25-year-old man, who came from Germany via Spain and was instructed to be in home quarantine after he landed at the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru on March 13, later tested positive for Covid-19 on March 18.

"She virtually hid her son to protect her family but endangered all of us," a South Western Railway official said.

Bengaluru, Jun 5: Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Thursday said government employees and owners of tractors and other vehicles must return the BPL ration cards immediately, failing which stringent legal action would be initiated against them.

The CM issued directions in this regard to officials as he conducted a review meeting of the Food and Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs department today. Proper supply of ration must be ensured to eligible beneficiaries and action has to be taken to prevent misuse of the facility by those not eligible, Yediyurappa was quoted as saying by his office in a release.

Nearly 63,000 ration cards were cancelled before the COVID-19 outbreak, he noted and directed officials to initiate a campaign to cancel all illegal ration cards. "this campaign would help in curtailing the financial burden on the State's reserves," he added.

In the backdrop of coronavirus pandemic, both the Central and State governments have distributed sufficient quantities of ration, and about 95 percent ration cardholders have availed the benefit, the release said. Under the Chief Ministers Anila Bhagya Scheme, 98,079 beneficiaries have been given 3 gas cylinders free of cost, it said.
