Air India asked to ensure passenger safety

Mangalore, June 21: In a hard rap for Air India (AI), Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Airports Authority of India (AAI), the ministry of civil aviation on Tuesday released additional recommendations pertaining to the Mangalore air crash which claimed 158 lives on May 22, 2010, directing the three agencies to get their act together to ensure passenger safety.

The additional recommendations include provision for runway end safety area (RESA); not to hasten issuance of FATA (Foreign Aircrew Temporary Authorization) licence at airline's insistence; compliance with requirement of frangibly-mounted structures citing that Calicut and Mangalore airport antenna supporting structures were examples.

The ministry recommended AAI should conduct an objective evaluation to ensure required size RESA is provided at each end of a runway at every airport, according to regulations.

The ministry came hard on AAI for not carrying out evaluation of the RFF (Rescue & Fire Fighting) vehicle type acquired for Mangalore airport.

"An efficient aerodrome emergency exercise would have indicated various problems and AAI could have taken suitable action. AAI should ensure such exercises are conducted to establish emergency preparedness including timed response of local fire brigade for emergencies outside the airport boundary,'' it stated.

The new recommendations virtually vindicate the stand taken by 812 Foundation. Yeshwant Shenoy, who filed a private complaint for criminal action against DGCA, AAI and AI, had argued in the court on most of the issues on which recommendations have been made by the ministry.

Bengaluru, Apr 22: With seven more people tested positive for COVID-19, the total number of cases now stands at 425 as of date in Karnataka, informed state health department on Wednesday.

Out of the total COVID-19 cases, 17 people have died and 129 have been discharged.
These seven new cases came to light in the last 24 hours.

With 1383 more cases and 50 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, India's total number of positive COVID-19 cases stands at 19,984, said the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Wednesday.

Bengaluru, Apr 16: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Thursday inaugurated a mobile Covid-19 testing booth in Bengaluru.

These mobile booths will be used in all wards of Bengaluru to collect samples of those suspected to be infected.

According to information available on the website of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, as of Thursday, 4:00 PM, 279 coronavirus cases have been reported from the state, with 80 cured/discharged/migrated and 12 deaths.

India's coronavirus tally is at 12,380 cases, said the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Thursday.

Bengaluru, June 23: A senior IAS officer allegedly, who had faced arrest in connection with I Monetary Advice (IMA) scam, today allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself at his residence in the city. 

The deceased is BM Vijay Shankar. He had been arrested by special investigation team (SIT) in the I Monetary Advice (IMA) case when he was deputy commissioner (DC) Urban Bengaluru. 

He had spent few days in the jail over his alleged involvement in the IMA scam and was released on bail. The IMA case is currently being probed by Central Bureau of Investigation.

Shankar was staying in Jayanagar near Ashoka Pillar along with his family members.

Shankar was accused of taking Rs 1.5 crore to approve a report on financial irregularities, and was accused of giving a clean chit to the main accused of IMA scam, Mohammed Mansoor Khan.

The incident came to light around 8 pm. It is alleged that Shankar ended his life around 7.00 pm, when he was alone in the house. Shankar was said to be under severe depression after his name surfaced in the scam, and his subsequent arrest.

However, the exact reason for his extreme step is yet to be identified. Tilak Nagar police have taken up the case of mysterious death under CrPc and are probing further. As of now the police officials have not found any death note. A senior officer said: "once we finish the procedures of investigating the spot his body will be shifted to Victoria hospital for post mortem. The report will find out exact cause of his death".

Police commissioner Bhaskar Rao said: "We have taken up the case of unnatural death with regard to Vijay Shankar's death. Further probe will reveal more details about it".
