Mangalore, June 22: Dozens of Bharatiya Janata Party activists on Friday courted arrest in the city by obstructing road traffic as part of the saffron party's nationwide 'Jail Bharo' agitation to protest the 'bad and corrupt governance' of the UPA Government at the Centre.

Led by Deputy Speaker of Karnataka Legislative Assemble N Yogish Bhat and MLC Ganesh Karnik, the BJP cadres took out a procession and put up road blockade at the strategic Mahaveera Circle at Pumpwell and courted arrest.

The agitation was also to press for the reduction of petrol price, protest hike in prices of essential commodities and step-motherly treatment meted out to non-Congress states by the Central Government.

Speaking ahead of staging blockade Mr Bhat said that Congress led UPA Government's irresponsible economic policies have put common man into trouble and has made the life distress.

He charged that while Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is leading a "corrupt" government, Congress President Sonia Gandhi is protecting the corrupt.

"They both are encouraging corruption under the garb of honesty, in the eight years of the UPA government, scams and corruption has broken all records," he said.

The BJP alleged that despite record production of crops in the last eight years, prices of essential commodities have been constantly on the rise.

"The import of crude oil is about 85 per cent of the present consumption. However, during the NDA regime, it was 65 to 70 per cent because we focused on alternate sources like piped gas, bio-diesel and ethanol," Mr Bhat said.

He said that as part of nationwide agitation DK district unit of BJP is organising road blocks and Jail Bharo programme in all the five Vidhana Sabha constituencies.

Mr Karnik said that BJP is also taking public awareness campaign 'Save Jammu Kashmir' against the report of three member interlocutor tem on Kashmir issue from June 23 to July 6.

He alleged that UPA government has failed to take any measures to bring into force the unanimous decision taken in the parliament in 1994 urging Pakistan to take back its control over Pak Occupied Kashmir.

He said that people of the country should reject UPA.

Culmination

The event marked the culmination of the 'Jan Sangarsh Abhiyan (Public Struggle Campaign)' of BJP, which began on June 7.

The saffron party had organised public meetings, protests and street marches in different parts of the country during this period to create awareness about these issues.

'Publicity Gimmick'

Meanwhile Congress has termed the 'Jail Bharo' agitation as a gimmick.

KPCC Secretary Ivan D'Souza told media persons that through this agitation, BJP leaders intended to give a taste of the jail experience to their workers as well.

“It is a fact that many prominent BJP leaders have already experienced confinement in jail on various charges of corruption and scandals and criminal activities. Many more are queuing up to go to jail. Now the same leaders have decided to send their workers to jails through a make-believe exercise to protest against price hike”, he said.

“The agitation is only a publicity gimmick and there is nothing that can be achieved from sending party workers to jail”, Mr D'Souza added.

Mangaluru, June 28: In his apparent bid to win the hearts of the people of Tulu Nadu while leaving this coastal city, Dr P S Harsha, the outgoing Mangaluru city police commissioner, today took to social media and thanked the people. The language he chose for his prolonged Facebook post and one paragraph tweet was Tulu.

“Loveable people of Kudla! I have received the transfer order after serving as the Commissioner of Police of Mangaluru City for 11 months. (During this period) I worked with utmost honesty and pro-people approach with the complete cooperation of my department. I wholeheartedly thank all those who supported me,” tweeted Dr Harsha, who is now posted in Bengaluru as the Deputy Inspector General and Commissioner of Information and Public Relations.

In his Facebook post, Dr Harsha claimed that thanks to his initiative “My Beat My Pride”, the policing in the coastal city has strengthened.

“My only intention was to put an end to rowdyism and illegal activities. I had given priority to curb the drug mafia. ‘My Beat My Pride’ became a successful initiative thanks to public support,” he said.

The IPS officer went on to claim that with the with the co-operation of the senior officers, the police department managed to efficiently handle situations during anti-CAA and pro-CAA agitations in the city, detection of explosives at Mangaluru International Airport and also during the covid-19 pandemic.

However, he did not mention about the death of two people in random police firing following a baton charge during anti-CAA protests in the city on December 19.

Belagavi, Jan 17: Maharashtra Minister of State for Public Health, Medical Education, FDA and Textiles Rajendra Patil-Yadravkar who had come here to participate in the martyrs day programme of Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES) was detained by the police and escorted back till the state borders on Friday.

MES had organised its annual martyrs day programme at Hutatma Circle here. Its leaders had earlier been asked by the District Administration and City Police to ensure that none of the political leaders from Maharashtra participate and create law and order problems by their anti-state statements.

Patil had managed to sneak into the city through a route which was not manned by the police. He came in an auto-rickshaw to the programme venue.

Police personnel present for security took him into their custody and later escorted him till the state’s borders with Maharashtra at Kognoli on the Pune-Bengaluru national highway.

MES leaders alleged that the police personnel violated protocol while taking the incumbent minister into their custody and they also roughed him up.

All vehicles entering the city from different routes and particularly from Maharashtra were screened to confirm that political leaders from the neighbouring state do not participate in the martyrs day programme and create problems by their statements that also affect law and order along with linguistic harmony.

It was not known if Patil had landed in the city on Thursday and managed to reach the programme venue without getting noticed by using an auto-rickshaw.
