Mangalore crash compensation: crew member's family approaches HC

Kasargod, June 25: More than two years after the Mangalore air crash that left 158 dead, families of the four-member cabin crew of the ill-fated Air India Express aircraft are awaiting compensation, with one family approaching the Kerala High Court.

Parents and sister of Mohammed Ali, a flight steward from Bhopal who died when the aircraft crashed on May 22, 2010, has filed a petition at the high court alleging that the National Aviation Company Ltd (the new name of Air India) is forcing them to accept a compensation limited to a maximum of Rs 35 lakh under Workmen's Compensation Act of 1923 whereas they should be treated as claimants towards compensation of an international passenger.

In the petition filed through advocate Kodoth Sreedharan, the family contends that cabin crew also falls under the category of international passenger according to Carriage by Air Act of 1972 and should be paid one lakh Special Drawing Rights, which equates to Rs 75 lakh each, as stipulated by the Montreal Convention that governs compensation rules for air disasters.

The family has also alleged that the aviation company is denying full compensation of Rs 75 lakh and is bargaining for lesser payment though the company has received the full insured amount from the insurer. A petition with similar contention by the father of one of the deceased passengers, Arikkad Abdul Salam, is pending before the Supreme Court. He approached the SC after a division bench of the Kerala High Court overturned a siangle bench's order asking the company to pay Rs 75 lakh as compensation.

Extend lockdown in Bengaluru for one more week: BBMP Mayor

Bengaluru, Jul 17: Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Mayor, M Goutham Kumar on Friday called for an extension of lockdown in the city for one more week due to rise in the COVID-19 cases.

"It will be better if we get more time to tackle COVID-19 cases, we wish for the extension of lockdown for one more week. We have given the proposal to the government," said M Goutham Kumar, BBMP Mayor.

"After the number of cases increased in Bengaluru, BBMP started antigen test in containment and hotspot zones of Bengaluru to tackle the cases which have crossed 2,000 mark," he added.

Along with Mayor, BBMP Commissioner Anil Kumar has also proposed the state government to extend lockdown in Bengaluru for one more week.

"The number of cases in Bengaluru increasing in Bengaluru rapidly. BBMP has inaugurated more than 200 vehicles in Bengaluru for the use of the antigen test," said Anil Kumar, Commissioner BBMP.

According to the Union Health Ministry, there are 51,422 COVID-19 cases in the state.

Mangaluru: Engineering student claims he got 600 threat calls for selling fish

Mangaluru, May 4: An engineering student has claimed to have received 600 threat calls in the past few days from unidentified people for starting fish business during the lockdown in Kavoor.

According to Sakshath Shetty, resident of Kavoor, he started receiving threat calls from various people after he started selling fish during the lockdown.

Police said they have been able to identify some of the numbers from where the threat calls were made and investigation is under way.

2nd flight chattered by KSCC brings 171 stranded Kannadigas from UAE to Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Jun 27: The second flight chartered by the Karnataka Sports and Cultural Club (KSCC) to repatriate stranded Kannadigas in UAE landed at Mangalore International Airport at 6 p.m. today.

The Air Arabia flight with 171 passengers took off from Sharjah international airport around 1 am (UAE Time). The flight had 18 pregnant women, 9 children, 3 infants, 8 senior citizens, 20 people with medical emergencies besides those have lost jobs, stranded visit visa holders and those who had reported deaths in their families.

KSCC had set up help desk to finalize list of passengers and guide them throughout the process. All the legal procedures were carried out smoothly.

KSCC president Mohammed Ismail accorded a warm welcome to all passengers. Rapid tests for Covid-19 were conducted before departure. Mandatory quarantine for all the passengers was arranged in three hotels in Mangaluru for a period of seven days.

KSCC office bearers Ismail, Javed, Safwan and volunteers were present at the airport during the time of departure. KSCC has expressed its gratitude to Consulate General, DC of DK district, Umar U H and Ataullah Jokkate for their support.
