Mangalore, June 25: A protest against the district administration demanding payment of rent and promised sanction of land for displaced Adivasi families was held in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office in Mangalore on Monday.
The protest was organized jointly by CPI (M), Karnataka State Adivasi Rights Committee, and Dalit Rights Committee, Mangalore.
Following Mangalore- BC Road four laning road work, six Adivasi Dalit families in Nanthoor were displaced for which they have not been given an alternative and neither are their home rents being taken care of by the district administration, the protestors alleged.
The district administration had promised 5 cents of land for each displaced family at Saripalli of Padavu village within six months. It had also promised assistance of funds in building houses for the families but no step has been taken so far. The district administration must fulfill its promise and provide lands besides bearing the temporary rents being paid by the poor families, the protestors demanded.
