Yuva Morcha activists embark on eye donation drive in DK

Mangalore, June 26: In order to create mass awareness regarding voluntary eye donation, a team of BJP Yuva Morcha activists from Mangalore South unit have embarked on a district-wide campaign under the banner of 'Kamala Jyothi'.

The campaign kick started on the occasion of the death anniversary of Syama Prasad Mookerjee, the godfather of modern Hindutva and Hindu Nationalism, with 38 young activists led by Adv. Raghavendra Rao, President, BJP Yuva Morch, Mangalore South, voluntarily pledging to donate their eyes.

Satish Prabhu was the resource person and Kishor Kumar was the chief guest. Guru Prasad Shetty compered the programme. Rakshith, Gurucharan, Naveen, Shreedhar, Shivaram and Bharath were present among others.

Speaking to coastaldigest.com Mr Rao said that the 'Kamala Jyothi' team would travel across Dakshina Kannada to create awareness among people.

He said that India is now home to the world's largest number of blind people. Of the 37 million people across the globe who are blind, over 15 million are from India. On the other hand, while India needs 2.5 lakh donated eyes every year, the country's eye banks manage to collect a maximum of just 25,000 eyes, 30% of which can't be used.

Mr Rao also said that shortage of donated eyes is becoming a huge problem in India. Of the 15 million blind people in country, three million, 26% of whom are children, suffer due to corneal disorders. But only 10,000 corneal transplants are being done every year due to the shortage of donated eyes, he added.

“Eye donation is the need of the hour. People are now aware of significance of blood donation. But they hesitate to donate their eyes even after their death, because many people have a blind belief that if they donate their eyes they would become blind in the next birth. We have to eradicate such blind beliefs and encourage people to donate their eyes”, said Mr Rao.

Bengaluru, Jul 30: Karnataka reported 83 deaths and 6,128 new cases in the state on Thursday. With this, the total number of cases in the state stood at 1,18,632, the state health ministry said.

Currently, there are 69,700 active cases, while a total of 2,230 people have lost their lives due to the pandemic till now.

There are 15,83,792 confirmed cases across the country. Of them, 5,28,242 cases remain active. While 10,20,582 have recovered, 34,968 patients have lost their lives due to the pandemic.

The Post Graduate Department of English, St. Agnes College (Autonomous) organized COSMOPOETICA – a Two-Day International Poets Conference, transcending the boundaries of language and bringing together scholars from English, Hindi and Kannada languages. The key-note speaker was Dr Hima Urmila Shetty and the Panel of Experts included Maggie Harris, a Commonwealth short stories award winning poet of Broadstairs, Kent; Dr Kathryn Hummel, a visiting professor at IIT Hyderabad; Prof Raj Rao, acclaimed poet and novelist, former HOD of English, Savithribai Phule University; Lata Chouhan from Bangalore; Vijay Tiwari from Ahmedabad; Dr. Nagaveni Manchi, an acclaimed Poet and Professor, Govt College, Carstreet and Ms. Chandrakala Nandavara, former Principal of Ganapati PU College.

Dr Sr Jeswina A.C., the Principal; Dr Sr Maria Roopa A.C. the Superior and Dr Sr Vinora A.C., graced the occasion.

Dr Geralyn Pinto, the Staff Convenor; Dr Malini Hebbar, the HOD and Ananya Sneha the student Convenor organised the Conference.

The highlight of the Conference was the Poetry Workshop, Slam Poetry Competition in three languages and paper presentations on various aspects of poetry.

Overall the conference drew together poets and academicians to discuss poetry as a genre and practice with ignited minds.

Belagavi, Jul 23: As many as 14 persons have been arrested following last night’s violence at Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS) - District Hospital.

Angered over the death of a Covid-19 patient, family members had turned violent and damaged the BIMS with stones and set an ambulance on fire alleging medical negligence. 

The 55-year-old male had been admitted to the hospital for treatment on July 19, for treatment of Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) and was positive for Covid-19 according to the report received on Wednesday. He died on Wednesday night while being shifted to Intensive Care Unit for treatment of respiratory problems.

Police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Two persons were detained in the spot and 12 persons later. The matter is under investigation and the police have launched a manhunt to nab the other accused.

During the violence, a police personnel and five other hospital staff suffered injuries.

Meanwhile, prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC were imposed in the areas surrounding the hospital to prevent crowd gathering. 

Deputy Commissioner M G Hiremath visited BIMS on Wednesday night and held a meeting with the doctors and nurses treating the patients and those who were at the receiving end of the violence.

Hiremath said that he instilled confidence among the doctors and nurses and assured them that safety measures would be taken. Security arrangements will be made and prohibitory orders will be imposed. Presently entry of people has been banned, he said.

Police Commissioner Dr K Thiyagarajan said that cases will be filed against all those responsible for the violence. People whose vehicles have been damaged can also file complaints.
