Drug addicts deserve treatment of humility: Seemant Kumar

Mangalore, June 26: “It is a combined responsibility of different sections of society to prevent people from getting addicted to drugs and the drug-addictors should not be treated as 'condemned.' Instead, they deserve the treatment of humility,” opined Mangalore City Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh.

He was speaking as a chief guest in a programme organised by Department of Psychiatry, Justice K S Hegde Charitable Hospital and Link integrated Rehabilitation Centre for addicts at Rosario Hall here to observe International day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking on Tuesday.

The Commissioner of Police read out the oath on the prevention of drug addiction and told that mere oath taking doesn't serve the purpose; one has to implement it effectively to be far from drug addiction as well as to prevent others from the addiction.

Friends, parents and relatives should help the addicted to come out of the vicious circle and treat the person with love and care. “The role of de-addiction centres is vital in this regard and the counselling centers should maintain the confidentiality of the person,” he said.

K S Hegde Charitable Hospital Psychiatry Department Head Dr Satheesh Rao said that there are physical, mental and social reasons for drug addiction. The children within the age group of 10-20 are more prone to drug addiction these days and according to a survey, 12.5 per cent of boys and 3 per cent of girls within this age are the victims of drug addiction for which force of thier friends is the main reason.

He told that the drug addiction should be treated at an initial level and most of the hospitals have de-addiction centres these days. “If not treated at an initial level, drug addiction may lead the addicted person to commit serious crimes,” he added.

Link Integrated Rehabilitation Centre for addicts, Mangalore and Dakshina Kannada District Child Welfare Committe President Asha Nayak detailed about the acts and laws regarding drug abusing and illicit trafficking.

Prior to the stage function, the artists of 'Jagan Power' group presented a play and sung awareness songs featuring the prevention of drug abuse.

Prizes were distributed to the winners of various competitions held on the occasion of International day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

With base price at just Rs 18, Indians now pay 275% in taxes to govt on every litre of petrol!

With the steep hike in excise duty in the past couple of months, an average consumer of petrol now pays over 275% in taxes to centre and states on a litre of the fuel. The base price of petrol is just about Rs 18. The taxes are close to Rs 50 and the pump price is over Rs 72.

India imports 85% of all its crude oil demand. After a steep hike in excise duty in the past two months despite a hold on daily price revisions by the oil public sector undertakings (PSUs), Indian consumers now pay 275% collectively in excise duty to state and centre.

The central government hiked excise on petrol and diesel by Rs 10 and Rs 13 respectively last month. The excise duty on petrol is taxed around Rs 33-a-litre while the same on diesel it is Rs 32.

The Value-Added Tax (VAT) on both petrol and diesel is Rs 16.44 and Rs 16.26 respectively. Both the taxes together are around Rs 49 while it is sold at petrol pumps at 73-per-litre.

These two taxes cumulatively account for 69% of tax which is higher than anywhere else in the world. The same is taxed at 19% in the US, 47% in Japan, UK 62% and 63% in France. The government does not pass on the benefit of lower crude oil prices to the customer.

It is to be noted that Indian consumers continued to pay Rs 70-a-litre even when crude oil prices hit a paltry US $ 20-a-barrel on April 12.

Former finance minister and Congress leader recently took a jab at the Centre over rising prices stating, “Fuel selling prices raised twice in two days, following tax hikes two weeks ago. This time to benefit oil companies. Government is poor, it needs more taxes. Oil companies are poor, they need better prices. Only the poor and middle class are not poor, so they will pay”.

Mangaluru | Pathologist of Wenlock hospital tests covid-19 positive

Mangaluru, Jul 2: A frontline covid-19 warrior who was working in the Wenlock Covid hospital in the city has been tested positive for the coronavirus.

Sources said that he was a pathologist working in covid testing laboratory of the Wenlock Covid hospital.

A few days ago, a senior health official had tested positive for the covid-19.

Dakshina Kannada has so far recorded deaths of 18 covid-19 patients. A total of 14,137 samples have been tested, out of which 13,040 have turned out negative, and 833 positive, including 10 persons from other districts. 372 cases are currently active.

Kundapur youth booked for FB post suggesting to kill 1,500 Muslims instead of conducting corona tests

Kundapur, Apr 10: Police have lodged a case against Nagaraj Mogaveera, 28, a resident of Karwadi Saukur in Kundapur, for sharing a communal hatred and sensitive post over Facebook.

On his Facebook page, he wrote, "1,500 persons went to Delhi mosque from Karnataka. Each person's test costs Rs 4,500 which becomes expenditure of Rs 67,50,000 in all. If they be encountered, each bullet costs Rs. 63 and the total expenditure will be Rs 94,500."

According to the complaint filed by Mukhtar Ahmad of the Janata Colony of Kundapur Karwadi village on Friday, the police have booked a case under the IPC Section 1860, 295A, 505 (2) and launched the investigation.
