Mangalore, June 26: A team of Mangalore City Corporation on Tuesday morning raided two prominent plastic manufacturing industries located at Baikampady Industrial Area in the city and seized huge quantity of prohibited plastic carry bags.

The team comprising of Environmental Engineer Manjunath R Shetty, Madhu, Sanitation Inspectors Yashwanth, Santhosh, Sushanth, Poovappa, Karunakar and Babu Mallanna on the directions of MCC Commissioner Dr Harish Kumar began the raid at 6:30 am.

Mr Shetty said that on entering the premises of 'Blue Chip' a suspicious movement of a driver near a stationary Tata 407 alarmed the officials and on inspecting the vehicle they found several gunny bags of plastic carry bags neatly stacked. The thickness of carry bags were less than 20 micron.

The worker in charge of the unit accepted that the vehicle was the property of the plastic manufacturing unit and mentioned that the neatly packed carry bags were scraps and were to be recycled. Hover when asked for proof, he was not able to produce the bill nor did he give any convincing answer.

Later, the vehicle along with the driver was escorted to Panambur police station. However, in front of the police, the driver of the vehicle changed the statement and said the vehicle and the goods belonged to him and the goods had been floated from Bombay to Mangalore for recycling and he was transporting the same to recyclers.

When asked about the purchase receipt or about the industries to which it was moved to, he gave evasive answer. MCC Officials later levied a penalty of Rs 1000 and seized the goods, Mr Shetty said.

He said that the seized goods would be handed over to Karnataka State Pollution Control Board and further investigation would be done by the concerned officials of KSPCB.

This raid once again has proved the manufacturing and circulation of prohibited plastic carry bags within Mangalore unabated even after series of Raids by MCC Officials.
