Mangalore, June 28: Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) has pledged to construct a full-fledged cricket stadium in city, said KSCA Mangalore Zone Chairman Dayanand Pai.

He was addressing a gathering during the prize distribution ceremony of First division league championship 2010-11 at Mangalore Club in city on Tuesday. “It is sad that Mangalore, which has all the other facilities, lacks a turf pitch and stadium.

The Association is striving hard to find land. We are assuring the cricket lovers in Mangalore that the stadium will be a reality soon,” he said. “Many business groups are coming forward to support us in this venture. We also have the hope that Chief Minister, who is from this area, will help in our efforts,” he added.

He also extended his support in providing scholarships for the financially backward talented cricket players from the city.

KSCA coordinator to Mangalore Zone A V Shashidar said that the RC (Royal Challengers)-KSCA Cricket Academy will soon function in Mangalore at Adyar Sahyadri College. He said that lack of infrastructure obstructs the development of cricket and cricketers in the city.

“Compared to other moffusil zones of KSCA, Mangalore has much more talented players who could well represent the state in national level. But the irony is that other zones have better facilities than Mangalore, but development is in slow pace,” he said.

A V Shashidar said that cricket development is not only concentrated in Bangalore nowadays. “Earlier if anyone wanted to get recognition in cricket, one had to play in Bangalore.

But now KSCA is providing all facilities at moffusil zones too. For the first time, moffusil teams are getting prize money in first division league. KSCA has allotted total prize money of Rs 27 lakh for the moffusil zones. Now all the moffusil zones of KSCA are having full-fledged cricket academies.

KSCA Mangalore Zone Convener Dr Srikanth Rai opined that the cricket in schools should get more importance. “As far as the game is concerned, development should take place from the grassroots. Schools are the best places to find out the budding talents.

We are already having school cricket tournament, which comprises of teams from Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Kodagu,” he said. Apart from school tourney, KSCA will also start cricket tournaments for Colleges in the Zone soon.

City Cricketers, the champions of the First Division Cricket Championship received a cash prize of Rs 75000 during the function.

Runners-Up Dakshina Kannada Cricket Association was given away a cash prize of Rs 60000 while Mangalore Sports Club and Mangalore Occasionals shared prize money of Rs 30000 each during the prize distribution ceremony.

Sachin Kumar (207 runs from 5 matches) and Sampath Kumar (16 wickets from 5 matches) were awarded best batsman and best bowler. KSCA Mangalore Zone Chairman Dayanand Pai and KSCA coordinator to Mangalore Zone A V Shashidar distributed the prizes.

Bengaluru, Apr 15: The Opposition Congress in Karnataka on Wednesday accused the BJP government, headed by Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, of showing discrimination in distribution of relief material to those affected by the lockdown, clamped to check the spread of Novel Coronavirus, by favouring constituencies represented by the ruling BJP Legislators.

Despite that, the party intends to extend full cooperation to the government during this hour of crisis without indulging in politics, it urged the administration to be “transparent”.

''We have had our (Congress) Task Force meeting today, during which we discussed several matters. There is a lot of difference between the government's talk and its deeds,'' KPCC President D K Shivakumar said.

Bengaluru, Jan 8: The Karnataka government on Tuesday decided to adopt a no-fail approach for Class 7 examinations for government and private schools following the state syllabus.

The report card of a student doesn’t carry ‘pass’ or ‘fail’ remark, but points to his or her strengths and weaknesses in each subject in the exams, which will now be called Common Evaluation Exam.

The quality cell of the Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board (which conducts SSLC exams) will prepare question papers, which will be evaluated at the district level by government and private schoolteachers. The Class 7 exams will be held in March.

The Common Evaluation Exam follows the Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) currently practised under the Right to Education Act. “The formative and summative assessments (tests, projects and quizzes) will be held as usual,”KG Jagadeesha, commissioner of public instruction, said.

Edu dept to launch helpline by March

For the March exam, summative assessment 2 will be held with half the syllabus. Other modalities (exam duration and total marks) will be announced next week,” said KG Jagadeesha. The CCE system will continue for classes 8 and 9. The government hopes the exam and subsequent interventions in classes 8 and 9 will boost students’ confidence for crucial board examinations.

Minister S Suresh Kumar said, “More than an exam, it’s an evaluation of a child’s knowledge. The Belagavi division has done something similar. The Kalaburagi zone found mathematics and science were areas of concern; language was an issue in Urdumedium schools.” The minister said zilla panchayat CEOs have observed that intervention should start from class 8. “Keeping this in mind, we’ve started necessary preparation for class 7 exam ,” he added.

The education department will start a helpline by March for students, teachers, school managements and educationists to 11 raise problems on day-to-day issues.

Bengaluru, July 20: The Karnataka government has reiterated that no final decision has so far been taken on reopening of schools in the state.

The clarification comes after minutes of the July 15 HRD ministry meeting where Karnataka education department officials said schools are reopening on September 1 went viral on social media.

“The state government has not decided yet on starting schools. That they will reopen in September was only a general opinion expressed by our officials at the meeting. At present, we have no plans to start schools unless there is a conducive environment. There’s no need for anxiety,” said primary and secondary minister S Suresh Kumar.

Kumar said the government is involved in meeting the education sector’s changed priorities in the current scenario.

The minutes were of a virtual conference on school-safety plans, with representatives of state governments and Union territories expressing views on reopening of schools.

Against the name of Karnataka, “After September 1” was written. Similar datelines were given by Kerala, Ladakh, Manipur, Rajasthan, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, while in case of many other states it said “no decision”.

An education department official said Karnataka submitted to MHRD that it will be able to take a decision only after September 1, depending on the situation in the state.
