Funds released for footbridges in DK, Udupi: Nagaraj Shetty

Mangalore, June 28: The state government has released Rs. 3 crores and Rs. 2 crores for Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts for the construction of footbridges in the coastal districts said B Nagaraj Shetty, Chairman, Coastal Development Authority.

Addressing media persons at Press Club in Mangalore on Thursday, Mr. Shetty said that owing to many places in the coastal district where people struggle to cross the waters and face connectivity problems, the CDA had sent a proposal to the state government for as many as 430 footbridges for an estimated total cost of Rs. 15 crores. The government has now released 5 crores which have been provided to Udupi and Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayats (Rs. 2 crores and Rs. 3 crores respectively) through which work will be carried out for footbridges in the two districts, Mr. Shetty said.

In Dakshina Kannada district, work will be carried out for 142 footbridges while in Udupi, 45 bridges will be concentrated upon.

Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda has assured that the other Rs. 10 crores would also be released soon. He has ordered an immediate release of Rs. 5 crore for Uttara Kannada district, Mr. Shetty said.

The road project between Athradi (Manipal) and Bajpe Airport has also progressed. The project being done on a PPP basis, talks have alreay been held with companies who have come forward to take it up, Mr. Shetty said. A proposal for a two-lane road between Talapady to Majali in Karwar has also been sent to the Chief Minister, he added.

Package for families in Naxal affected areas

Mr. Shetty said that the government has approached the families living in naxal affected areas that lack basic facilities in Kudremukh, Karkala and Belthangady with a rehabilitation scheme.

A Rs. 100 crore package has been created for the purpose. Talks are being held with each family with regard to compensation. No forceful agreements are being made. About 60% of the families have agreed to shift, Mr. Shetty said.

Bengaluru , Mar 21: Karnataka Congress President DK Shivakumar exuded confidence that the party will return to power in the state and praised former chief minister Siddaramaiah's term.

"I am confident that we will come back to power. Everyone in the past has worked their best to build the party. Siddaramaiah being a full-term chief minister gave the best programs to Karnataka, his government's programs were the best of all time," Shivakumar said at a press conference on Friday.

He further assured his full support to anyone who wanted to work for the betterment of the party.

"Though I have become the state president of the party but I am still the worker of Congress and each of us should work for the party as ground workers. I am ready to give any kind of support to those who want to work for the party. We need to take all caste, communities along for the betterment of the party," he said.

Shivakumar was appointed the state Congress President on March 11, while Eshwar Khandre, Satish Jarkiholi, and Saleem Ahmed have been appointed working presidents of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee.

Udupi, Jan 1: A 53-year-old Journalist of a Mangalore-based media house was found dead at his flat in Manipal on Tuesday.

The deceased has been identified as Rohit Raj (53), a resident of Pandeshwar Mangaluru.

According to the Manipal police, on December 31, Rohit Raj had attended a New Year party celebration at Kadiyali, Udupi along with his wife.

Bengaluru, Jul 22: Yellow alert has been issued for Karnataka's Shivamogga, Chikmagalur, Hassan, and Kodagu for July 23 and 24.

Some areas of Bengaluru may receive light rainfall today, said CS Patil, Director, IMD Centre, Bengaluru.

He added that coastal areas of the state are very likely to experience rainfall from on July 23 and July 24, and that rainfall may increase July 24 onwards. Widespread rainfall is predicted for July 24th, 25th, and 26th.
