Physically challenged, school teacher die in two road mishaps

Mangalore, June 29: Two people were crushed to death in two separate road accidents in Dakshina Kannada and Uttara Kannada districts on Thursday.

A physically changed pedestrian died on the spot when speeding pick-up truck plying from BC Road to Mangalore hit him at Adyar on the outskirts of Mangalore.

Punjanga Poojary (35) a resident of Bylahandi, was walking along the road when the accident occurred. The driver of the vehicle, Abdul Hameed, from Addoor, fled the spot. A case has been registered at Mangalore Rural Police Station.

In another accident reported from Shigehalli in Sirsi taluk, a 46-year-old woman died after a car rammed into her scooter.

Parvathi.G. Hegde (46), a teacher at the Government Higher Primary School was on her way to school when the accident occurred.

She breathed her last while she was being taken to Hubli for emergency treatment.

She is survived by husband, a son and a daughter. Sirsi Rural Police have registered a case against the car driver Timmappa Marya from Hunsehonda, for reckless driving.

Mangaluru, Mar 22: A video being circulated in the social media purportedly of a man infected with COVID-19 at a hospital here is fake, its authorities said.

The video which shows a youth, dressed in pink trousers and wearing a mask, struggling to breathe on a blue hospital bed, had gone viral after which the Wenlock hospital issued a clarification.

The video started circulating after Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner made public Sunday that a person has tested positive for coronavirus at the hospital.

"A video of a patient convulsing on a hospital bed is being circulated on social media. This video is not of Wenlock hospital. Besides, we do not use blue beds," the hospital said in a statement, adding that they will file a complaint with the police regarding the video.

The first COVID-19 case in the district was confirmed at the hospital on Sunday.

The 22-year old man who came here from Dubai was tested positive and is under treatment in the isolation ward.

Bengaluru, May 27: Karnataka Chief Minister Yediyurappa on Wednesday said that his government will re-open temples, mosques and churches in the state after May 31.

"We are going to open temples, mosques and churches in the state after May 31, he said while speaking to media in Bengaluru.

The Chief Minister added that the "guidelines will be followed" as suggested by experts for opening the worship places.

"We have no objections to open malls and cinema halls, but we are waiting for the guidelines of the central government, Prime Minister will take decisions to allow malls and cinemas to open," he added.

Yediyurappa has said that people from Gujarat, Maharashtra, Kerala and Tamil Nadu will not be allowed in the state till May 31.

Bengaluru, Jul 30: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palika (BBMP) on Wednesday issued a notice restricting the sacrifice of animals during Bakrid or other religious occasions in certain places.

This year Eid al-Adha or Bakra eid will be celebrated on August 1.

"The administration has prohibited the sacrifice of animals in public roads, footpaths, inside or outside the premises of hospitals/nursing homes, schools and colleges, temples mosques, other religious places or public places," the BBMP said in a public notice.

Person or organisation violating the notice is liable to be prosecuted under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, stated BBMP.
