Police wrongly slapping Dalit Atrocity cases during communal clashes'

Mangalore, July 1: Police are misusing their power by slapping Atrocity cases against culprits involving in communal clashes, Shekhar Belthangady, a Dalit representative said.

He raised the issue at the monthly SC/ST grievance meet held at the SP's office in Mangalore on Sunday.

Citing an instance of a communal clash that took place in Kuvettu of Puttukere in Belthangady Taluk following blocking of cow transportation on June 14, Mr. Shekhar said that the police had booked cases under the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, against the members of another community when people of other castes where also involved and injured.

“Under Atrocity Act, one gets six months of imprisonment. The group which involved in a clash with another community consisted of Dalits but there were people of other castes too. It does not come under Dalit atrocity as such because the intent was not to harm Dalits specifically. Why are Dalits and Dalit laws being used to target a community and settle personal scores? Dalits always end up being the middlemen and the victims. In one of the communal clashes that took place almost 80% of the people who were put in jails were Dalits. In many cases of communal clashes that took place in the district, Dalits were among the ones who got injured so if filing a Dalit atrocity case is the norm, why weren't similar cases filed in communal clashes all these years?” Mr. Shekhar told Coastaldigest.com

Responding to the query, Abhishek Goel, SP, DK, said that the police file cases on a case to case basis and a lot depends on the nature of complaint that the police receive.

SP Anand, District President, DSS (Ambedkar Vada) raised the issue of delay in compensations to victims of atrocity cases stating that many Dalits have been coming all the way from places like Sullia and going back after spending money and time. The SP in his response assured that by next grievance meeting a report would be prepared as to how many compensations have been settled and how long would it take to settle the remaining ones.

Mangaluru, Jun 3: A banner that read "Veer Savarkar Flyover Pumpwell" surfaced on the sidewall of the Pumpwell flyover in Mangaluru on Tuesday night.

It is suspected that activists of Bajrang Dal put up the controversial banner. Though it was removed later, it sparked debates on social media and photos of it went viral.

The development comes amid the controversy over the naming of a flyover at Yelahanka in Bengaluru after Savarkar.

A Hindutva ideologue, Savarkar has tendered apology to British imperialists and pledged to support them following his arrest during India’s freedom movement.

Bengaluru, Mar 27: Karnataka has recorded the third death due to the Covid-19 virus. It is a man from Tumakuru with a travel history to Delhi. He had been put in isolation at the District Hospital in Tumakuru on March 24.

His travel history indicates that he travelled to New Delhi by the Sampark Kranti Express (Coach S6) on March 5 along with 13 members. They reached Hazrat Nizamuddin station in New Delhi on March 7 and went to the Jamia Masjid and rented an room at a lodge nearby.

He began the return journey to Karnataka by the Kongu Express on March 11 in Coach no. S9. On March 18, he developed cough and fever and visited a private hospital the next day. He was referred to the District Hospital in Tumakuru but on March 24, he left the hospital against medical advice and went to a private medical facility. He was referred back to the District Hospital, where he was put isolation.

Bengaluru, Jan 5: Former Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara has said the Karnataka Congress has unanimously decided to appeal to the party high command regarding the appointment of KPCC President and Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader in the state.

Speaking to reporters, the Congress leader said, "We have decided to gather the opinion of senior leaders regarding the selection of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president and opposition leaders. We will appeal to the high command regarding the same. The party will decide its next course of action."

He made these remarks after a meeting of senior party leaders was held at Parameshwara's residence here on Saturday.

Adding that the Congress leaders discussed the current political scenario in the state, Parameshwara said: "We held a meeting to reiterate that we are not confused and we all are together."

"There has been no personal discussion on who should be the president," he said.

Earlier, KPCC president Dinesh Gundu Rao and former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had tendered resignation from their respective posts owning moral responsibility for the party's poor performance in the recent by-polls.
