Udupi, July 1: Most of the media reports ending up in mere allegations result in media losing its credibility. There is a need to make the reports authentic. In that direction the RTI Act can be of great help, said senior journalist Asha Krishnaswamy.

She inaugurated the Press Day programme organised by Udupi District Working Journalists' Association, here on Sunday by unveiling the photo copy of the first edition of first ever Kannada newspaper Mangaloora Samachara'.

Journalists' proximity to police, bureaucrats and politicians would lose them of their freedom, she opined.

Chief guest of the programme editor of oneindia.in SK Shyamasundar stressed the need for a campaign to popularise Kannada in the web. ``We shall be able to search any information in Kannada too'', he said.

On the occassion UNI reporter Madhava Acharya was felicitated with the Press Day Honour-2012. A photography exhibition by the members of the Association was also organised. Winners of the essay competition organized for High School and PU students were given away the prizes.

Udupi DySP PRabhudev Maane was the guest of honour. President of the Association Kiran Manjanbail presided over the function. Secretary Jayakar Suvarna welcomed the gathering. Treasurer Umesh Marpally proposed the vote of thanks. Prasanna Gaonkar compered the programme.
