Need greater importance to literature in newspapers: Jogi

Mangalore, July 2: Owing to the growing colour and layout craze, newspaper supplements are turning out to be 'distbins of words' said Jogi, popular columnist and Editor, Udayavani weekly supplement.

He was speaking at a programme organized by the Dakshina Kannada Working Journalists' Association at Press Club in Mangalore on Monday.

Lamenting that media establishments have gradually distanced literature from newspapers, Mr. Jogi said that Editorial and Op-Ed pages would once carry content of great literary value. “Today, Edit pages and Op-Ed pages are being wasted by featuring debates on trivial issues”, he observed.

Recalling his younger days, Mr. Jogi said that writer-journalists like P Lankesh had inspired him. Writers like Lankesh, P Sainath etc have contributed to literature as well as journalism, he said, adding that encouragement to literature is not being given in Kannada journalism today. “There is a need for Kannada literary figures to take initiatives and figure in the news world, the way likes of Chetan Bhagat make their presence felt in English media”, he said.

On a lighter note, Mr. Jogi said that earlier, newspapers would take people's problems to politicians but today they are bringing politicians' problems to people.

Vasanth Kumar Perla, Programme Executive, Akashavani, Mangalore, in his inaugural address said that journalists must not sacrifice credibility for competition. Visual media like television have a greater responsibility towards the society as they are more powerful in terms of communication compared to print and radio, he said.

P B Harish Rai, President, Dakshina Kannada Working Journalists' Association, welcomed. Ram Krishna Rao, President, Mangalore Press Club, proposed the vote of thanks.

Mangaluru, May 8: Migrant workers, stranded in Karnataka due to lockdown, staged a protest on Friday at the Central Railway Station here, demanding to be sent back to their respective native places.

The workers demanded the state government to take measures and send them back to their homes.

Maintaining social distancing and covering their faces with masks, the workers were holding placards which read -- "We want to go home Jharkhand, We want justice and we want to go home."

They appealed to the state government to arrange trains and buses to ferry them to their native places and threatened to walk home if denied transport.

Several protests have erupted in different parts of the country, such as Andhra Pradesh and Kerala, as stranded labourers took to the roads demanding to be sent back home.

The Ministry of Home Affairs on May 1 had issued an order to extend the ongoing lockdown by two more weeks from May 4 with some relaxations.

Kasaragod, Feb 5: The customs officials has confiscated 15.5 kilograms gold from a car at Bekal near here on Wednesday.

Sources said, acting on a tip-off, the customs sleuths intercepted a car at Bekal, and seized the yellow metal which is being smuggled by the occupants into Kerala.

The police also managed to arrest the two youth identified as Khetan (29) and Akash (23), both natives of Maharashtra. They had hidden the gold in the cushion. 

The accused confessed that the gold was being transported from Thalassery to Maharashtra illegally. The custom officials are investigating to find others involved in the case.

Bengaluru, Jul 23: The Siddi community in Karnataka got its first lawmaker as Governor Vajubhai Vala nominated five persons, including Shantharama Budna Siddi, to the Karnataka Legislative Council on Wednesday.

Shantharama Siddi had been working as a social worker and was a post holder at the Vanavasi Kalyan Prakalpa, a tribal welfare initiative of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

The Siddis, an ethnic group in India, are said to have descended from the people of the East African region. They are included in the list of Scheduled Tribes (ST) in Karnataka.

Apart from the Shantharama, the inclusion of CP Yogishwar, who had left Congress to join BJP in 2017 but failed to retain his seat in the 2018 Assembly polls, is also considered as a big decision.

Adagur H Vishwanath, another former JDS leader, who had quit his party and joined BJP but failed to retain his seat has also caught the attention of the people.

Further, Governor Vala has nominated Talwar Sabanna and Bharathi Shetty to the Upper House in the state.
