July 2, 2012

Mangalore, July 2: Inter-State Gandhi Peace Bus traversing the landscape bearing the footprints of the Father of the Nation was accorded a warm reception on its arrival in the city on Monday.

Deputy Speaker of Karnataka Legislative Assembly N Yogish Bhat and Mangalore MLA U T Khader were present among the others to welcome the bus and its delegation in front of the Canara High School, Dongerkery at around 11:30 am.

Students and faculty members from various schools came to see the exhibition organised aboard the bus. The touring team was then accorded a reception by the students and faculty members of Canara High School.

The expedition is organised by Kerala Gandhi Smarak Nidhi (KGSN) in association with the National Foundation for Communal Harmony and the Indian Council of Gandhian Studies, New Delhi.

The convoy which started its expedition 22 days ago from Kanyakumari has already covered many major places visited by Gandhiji along the way.

KGSN chairman N Radhakrishnan said the main purpose of the expedition was to encourage the youth to follow the routes Gandhi travelled under a well-designed programme. Gandhi visited 394 places between Kanyakumari and Mangalore.

The convoy comprises of a passenger coach, an exhibition van, a tableau with Charka and accompanying vehicles. About 40 youth volunteers and 20 Gandhian activists are accompanying the caravan which has travelled across 1200 km visiting 68 historical places immortalised by Gandhiji's visit.

This epic journey involved hosting or participating in 32 seminars, discussions and interactions, honouring of freedom fighters and Gandhian activists, spinning wheel live demonstration, Gandhi pictorial exhibition, screening Gandhi films and Gandhi book exhibition.

Mangalore is the concluding station for the campaign. In the city the bus first paid a visit to Gandhi Temple, Garodi, which is the only temple in the world dedicated to the Father of the Nation. The valedictory ceremony was held at Canara Girls' High School, Dongerkery for which Mahatma Gandhi had laid the foundation stone in 1934.

Bengaluru, Jun 19: Congress leaders BK Hariprasad and Naseer Ahmed filed their nominations as party candidates for Legislative Council elections in Bengaluru and KPCC chief DK Shivakumar said that the two leaders have been given ticket to strengthen the party with their guidance.

"The Legislative Council means the Upper House and the Elders House. We have unanimously agreed to select and send these two senior leaders to discuss the party organization and various issues of the state in Legislative Council. There were plenty of aspirants to enter the Upper House. But it is decided to elect these two leaders and they will contest the election," Shivakumar said.

"We need seniority to guide us... That's the reason we are selecting these leaders... The high command has given these senior leaders the opportunity to discuss with all our leaders about strengthening the party," he added.
