Mangalore, July 4: Mangalorean Sahana Kumari, an alumni of Gokarnatheshwara College became the 14th Indian athlete to qualify for the 2012 London Olympic Games when she cleared 1.92m to achieve this distinction on the first day of Senior National Athletic Championship in GMC recently held in Hyderabad.

She is a sportswoman par excellence and has proved her mettle by qualifying for the London Olympics. Hailing from Ullal, she had her early education at Anandashrama school in Someshwar and later at Mysore Sports Hostel. She had studied in the college for her graduation in 2001.

College Physical Education Teacher Purushotham Poojary said that Sahana's sister Harshini was also a sports talent. “I had wished Sahana that she must take part in Olympics, when she was a student. I am happy over her achievement,” he goes down memorylane.

“In fact, she had called me and had reminded me of my wish soon after getting qualified for the Olympics,” he added. Harshini and Sahana were winning medals, at the state-level contests during her school days. Inspired from her sister, Sahana had learnt the tricks of high jump when she was in fourth standard itself.

When she was pursuing her degree, she had created a new record in the Mangalore University-level and All India inter-University level sports meet, Poojary recalled.

Sahana's mother Yashodha made it a habit to wake both her daughters early morning and send them for practice. This helped her a lot to pursue and succeed in the field of sports. She has been taking part in a number of sports events, at the international level as well, and has won several medals, honours and recognition. She is now working for Central Railways.

In fact, she was trained by late Jalandhar Rai in her school days. The talent of both the sisters were brought to light by late Sridhar Rai. It was A Sadananda Shetty, Janardhan Poojary and others who helped Sahana during her college days. At present, Sahana is in Kazhakistan.

Sahana's husband Nagaraj is a national-level sprinter.

Former international high jumper Rohith Kumar Kateel said that normally, performance of the athletes, especially in sprint and high jump, comes down after 26 years. “The performance of Sahana has stunned all of us,” he said.

Athletic coach Vasanth Kumar says that the achivement of Sahana is laudable. Being a mother of a child, her achievement is really amazing, he said.

Bengaluru, Jun 30: In an attempt to tackle unemployment amidst covid-19 crisis, the Karnataka state government has launched a job portal connecting employers and job seekers.

The portal, 'Skill connect' ( https://skillconnect.kaushalkar.com/ ) provides region-wise and sector-wise job listings. An interested candidate can register on the portal and either apply for jobs or can also seek skill training.

As on Monday, the portal has 25 registered companies with over 2000 jobs available in various sectors.

The portal works more or less on similar lines as that of any private job portal, except that those posting jobs and candidates searching for employment will have to register with the Skill Development Department.

Launching the portal on Monday, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa hoped that the portal would provide an impetus to job creation, as well as the economic revival of the state.

Deputy Chief Minister Dr. C.N. Ashwath Narayan who is also the skill development Minister added, "All these years, there was no information and communication between job seekers and recruiters. This portal will solve that problem."

Also, until now, there hasn't been comprehensive information either on those seeking jobs or those looking for employees. The skill development efforts have not been in sync with the market. All these issues would be addressed by the portal, he said.

According to Karnataka Skill Development Authority Managing Director Ashwin Gowda, the portal has already seen a response with about 68 applicants in just a day.

Officials said even the organisations will have to register with the government while providing all documents concerned. The government aims to avoid any fake job advertisements through this. "We will also enable virtual interviews between the candidate and the employer," sources in the department told DH.

Recently, the government had also launched a portal exclusively for migrants who had returned to Karnataka from other places. This was meant to work as a skill registry.

However, the portal that was launched on Monday, went a step ahead by connecting both the prospective employers and employees, according to officials in the department.
