Transit home to rehabilitate street urchins, rag pickers, child labourers

Mangalore, July 4: “With my parents fighting all the time, there was no peace at home. My father died a few years ago and my mother remarried. However, she too died. I and my younger sister were sent to our Uncle's home who took the best advantage of orphaned kids. My uncle sent me to differnt homes for house work and made good money. I taught my dream of being a doctor will remain a distant reality until I was resuced by Child Welfare Committee and enrolled to the transit home,” says Lakshmi.

The little girl, probably 12, had a tormented past and now seeks solace at the transit home which was inaugurated at Government High School Bejai in Mangalore on Tuesday.

Transit homes, an initiative by Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan in association with Prajna Counselling Centre was introduced to rehabilitate street urchins, rag pickers, child labourers and children addicted to drugs.

This home acts as a temporary stay and the children will be counselled to overcome the trauma they have faced. The children will be taught hygiene, discipline and most importantly their confidence will be boosted.

Once ready, these children will be rehabilitated permanently in a government residential school where they will be provided eduaction for free.

“Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan conducted a survey and identified 54 children who lived in miserable conditions. These children were admitted to Prajna Counselling Centre as the transit home was under construction. These children were counselled. Now almost a year, most of the children have overcome their trauma. Many show interest in studying and nurture big dreams,” said Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan Assistant Coordinator Geetha at the inauguration of the new transit home building at Bejai.

She further revealed that 34 children have already been admitted in various residential schools and 20 will be rehabilitated in the Government residential school which is being constructed in Belthangady.

The transit home was inaugurated by DK ZP President Sahilaja Bhat, by lighting the lamps held by the children. “I hope that the intake of these children will reduce every year. No child should undergo the trauma, these children have faced,” said Bhat and congratulated Prajna Counselling Centre Director Hilda Rayappan for working with these children and giving them a new hope to live.

“I always wanted to study but my parents stopped my eduaction so that I could baby-sit by younger sister. No one cared for my basic needs. Many a times, I craved for a good meal. In transit home, I am given a good meal and even non veg food once a week,” says Prashanth from Marakadda.

“I never knew that I am supposed to brush my teeth. Today I have my very own tooth brush, paste, soap and more importantly people who care for me,” he innocently adds.

He reveals that he has now learnt to read, write and loves all the activities the caretakers of transit homes organise for the inmates.

DKS plans political ‘ghar wapsi’ to bring leaders back to Congress

Bengaluru, June 5: Under the leadership of trouble-shooter D K Shivakumar, the Karnataka Congress is planning a political ‘ghar wapsi’ to bring back leaders who quit the party and also rope in those from other parties.

Shivakumar, the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president, has constituted a 12-member committee headed by former minister Allum Veerabhadrappa to liaise to anchor this effort to bring back people into the party fold.

The committee comprises of former legislators B A Hasanabba, Ajaykumar Sarnaik, Abhaychandra Jain, Satish Sail, Prafulla Madhukar, former MPs R Dhruvanarayan and BN Chandrappa, MLA V Muniyappa, former mayor Sampath Raj, Mahila Congress leader Kripa Alva and former KPCC general secretary V Y Ghorpade.

This move comes more than a year after over a dozen Congress MLAs defected and joined the BJP, leading to the collapse of the Congress-JD(S) coalition government. Also, several influential leaders quit the party ahead of the Lok Sabha elections last year.

The constitution of this committee also coincides with disgruntlement brewing within the ruling BJP.

“Many people who left the party and others have applied (to join Congress). Many have met me also. I felt it wouldn't be right for me to make a decision. So, this committee has been constituted,” Shivakumar said. “They will process all applications and send it to the KPCC.”

According to Shivakumar, any person wanting to join the Congress should accept the party’s leadership and its ideology. “Importantly, they should be first accepted by the cadre. If there's no acceptance from the cadre, then what's the point?” he said.

COVID-19: Karnataka CM designates Primary Edu Min as govt spokesperson

Bengaluru, Apr 4: Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Friday asked Primary and Secondary Education Minister S Suresh Kumar to be the government's spokesperson on the Novel Coronavirus crisis management effort, a move that is being seen as keeping too many cooks from spoiling the broth.

At a high-level meeting to review measures on COVID-19 containment, Mr Yediyurappa is said to have taken exception to his Cabinet colleagues making multiple, and often contradictory statements, leading to confusion.

''The CM has directed Mr Kumar to be the only one to brief the media on COVID-19,'' a source from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) confirmed.

39-yr-old woman, 42-yr-old brother end lives by self-immolation in Bantwal

Bantwal, Jun 16: Two unmarred siblings committed suicide by self-immolation at Sangabettu in Bantwal taluk of Dakshina Kannada last night.

Neelayya Shettogar (42) and his sister Kesari (39) poured petrol on themselves before torching themselves at around 11 p.m. on June 15 inside a room of their house, police sources said. The siblings were reportedly facing health problems.

Neelayya's brother and latter’s wife were sleeping in the other room of the same house when the incident took place. They came to know only when they heard the screams of the duo.

Even though the siblings were rushed to the government hospital at Bantwal with the help of locals, the doctors declared them dead.

Bantwal rural police sub-inspector, Prasanna and staff visited the spot as part of investigation.

Very sad. What happening to our youths. Are they going crazy or the mountain fell on them? Why do our people are becoming so coward? I think many are going under depression. Govt should set up rehabilitation/counselling centres in each Mandals/Taluks/Districts to treat such people.
