SDPI condemns delay in appointing Lokayukta

July 4, 2012
Mangalore, July 4: Members of the district unit of Social Democratic Party of India staged a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here on Tuesday in protest against the delay in appointing the Lokayukta.

They raised slogans against the BJP government and Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda for delaying the appointment.

After Santosh Hegde's tenure as Lokayukta ended, the State government is afraid of appointing a Lokayukta because most of the State's BJP leaders are linked to the mining mafia, land-grabbing, corruption and possession of illicit wealth, the protesters claimed.

Addressing the gathering Akbar Ali, District General Secretary of SDPI said that the BJP government should take immediate steps to appoint a Lokayukta if it had trust in, and respect for, the democratic system and if it wanted to give a transparent administration to the people, they added.

He demanded that the State government appoint the Lokayukta at the earliest and warned that attempts by the State government to weaken the Lokayukta institution would not be tolerated.

In a memorandum submitted to the Governor through the Deputy Commissioner here, Abdul Jaleel, president of the district unit, said that the appointment of Lokayukta had taken a back seat as leaders of the BJP were fighting for power. Besides, development activities had come to a halt in the State, he said.

He urged the Governor to direct the State government to appoint the Lokayukta and Lokayuktha Superintendents of Police in 19 districts, failing which the agitation would be intensified.

Riyaz Ahmed, Member, Nawaz Ullal, Ismaeel Engineer, Shareef Arkula, Abdul Khader Kankanady, Ashraf Manchi, Yusuf Aladka and others were present.
