Karnataka opposes world heritage tag to Western Ghats

Bangalore, July 4: Karnataka today said the state was against UNESCO declaring 10 spots in Western Ghats as world heritage sites as it would affect development work.

Minister for Forest C P Yogeshwar told reporters here that though the state had opposed the proposal, the Centre has gone ahead with the notification.

Development efforts will be hit if these places were declared as world heritage spots and people living there would face hardship, he said.

Yogeshwar said he would discuss the issue with the Chief Minister later in the day.

BJP MLA D N Jeevaraj, who hails from Chikmagalur district, located in the Malnad region of the state, which passes through the western ghats, also opposed the UNESCO decision.

The state had last year written to the Centre that the spots falling in western ghats in Karnataka should not be declared as heritage centres.

UNESCO's World Heritage Committee included India's 1600-km Western Ghats mountain chain in its list of world heritage sites recently for being one of the eight "hottest hotspots" of biological diversity.

Kundapur, Apr 10: Police have lodged a case against Nagaraj Mogaveera, 28, a resident of Karwadi Saukur in Kundapur, for sharing a communal hatred and sensitive post over Facebook.

On his Facebook page, he wrote, "1,500 persons went to Delhi mosque from Karnataka. Each person's test costs Rs 4,500 which becomes expenditure of Rs 67,50,000 in all. If they be encountered, each bullet costs Rs. 63 and the total expenditure will be Rs 94,500."

According to the complaint filed by Mukhtar Ahmad of the Janata Colony of Kundapur Karwadi village on Friday, the police have booked a case under the IPC Section 1860, 295A, 505 (2) and launched the investigation.

Bengaluru, Feb 17: Karnataka State Government have plans to establish three more ultra Mega Renewable Energy power parks, each of 2500 MW capacity, Karnataka Governor, Vajubhai Wala informed the joint legislative meeting, here on Monday.

Addressing a Joint Legislative meeting here, he said that the proposed Ultra Mega Renewable Energy parks would come up at Koppala, Bidar and Gadaga in the state.

Bengaluru, May 4: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa has said that the free bus service for migrant workers has been extended by two days in the state.
 
The service was supposed to end on Tuesday, but it has now been extended till Thursday.
 
The Chief Minister has appealed to workers and other people that they can return to their hometowns without having to gather in large numbers at bus stops.
 
He said, "951 KSRTC buses on Sunday were provided in the state for the travel of migrants. About 1,500 passengers have already gone in 50 busses."
 
On Saturday, an estimated 16,500 passengers in 550 buses left for their homes.
 
On Monday two trains will leave for Rajasthan and Bihar, the Chief Minister said.
 
He said in a press release that everyone will be provided with free meals and water before the journey.
