Schoolboy, fisherman drown in Udupi

Udupi, July 4: A young schoolboy and an elderly fisherman lost their lives after drowning in two separate incidents in different parts of Udupi district on Wednesday.

In the first incident, a fisherman was drowned in the Shambhavi River at Hejamadi Kodi.

Police identified the deceased as Padmanabha Suvarna, son of Shivarama Sriyan and resident of Hejamadi Kodi.

The tragedy occurred when he was engaged in fishing along with his brother-in-law Purushothama Suvarna in a small boat on Wednesday morning. When the rain began to lash suddenly, Padmanabha lost his control and fell into the river.

Though Purushothama and other fishermen tried to rescue him, they could only trace his dead body. A case was registered at Padubidri police station in this regard.

In a separate incident a 13-year-old boy was drowned in a natural pond under the limits of Kundapur Police Station at around 7.30 am on Wednesday.

The deceased has been identified as Anup, son of Chandra Billava of Tallur. He was a Class VIII student at Church School, Tallur.

The tragedy occurred when he had been to the fields to inspect the paddy cultivation works and slipped in to the nearby pond.

A case has been registered by Kundapur police in this regard.

Mangaluru, Jan 18: The Dakshina Kannada District Karavali Utsava Samiti has chosen senior Journalist and Assistant Editor on Udayavani Daily Manohar Prasad for the Karavali Gaurava Prashasti 2019-20.

The award will be presented to Manohar Prasad in recognition of his contribution in the field of Journalism.

He will be given the award during the valedictory of the Karavali Utsav at Panambur beach on January 19.

Bengaluru, Apr 11: Seven more people have tested positive for coronavirus taking the tally to 214 in the state.

"Coronavirus cases rise to 214 in Karnataka, with seven more people testing positive between 5 PM Friday and 12 PM Saturday," said the Karnataka health department.

According to the health department, all these seven people have a history of contact with COVID-19 patients. Five of them are workers of a pharmaceutical company in Mysuru.

"Out of the total cases in the state, six people have died while 37 others were cured or discharged," added the state health department.

Shivamogga, Mar 8: In a tragic incident, three people died on the spot and one person severely injured after a car, in which they were travelling dashed against a wayside tree in Kaspadi village in Sagar Taluk on Sunday.

Police said that the deceased have been identified as Siddappa (40), Venkatesha (50), G Tippanna (60), while injured Nagaraj, was admitted to Hospital at Sagar.

The mishap took place when the victims were their way to visit Kargal Village from Raichur.
