Newly married couple, driver killed in bus-jeep collision; 30 injured

Kasargod, July 5: Three persons were killed and 30 others were injured, some of them seriously, when a bus and a jeep collided near Cheruvathur in the Kasargod district on Wednesday.

The deceased have been identified as S K Sharafuddin (25), his wife Umaira (20) and the jeep driver Lincy Joney (25).

It is learnt that the couple who had marred last month was returning home to Bedadaka after paying a visit to Sharafuddin's uncle's home. Sharafuddin was scheduled to return to gulf on July 8 after completing the vacation.

The police said the accident occurred around 5 p.m. when the two vehicles were negotiating a sharp curve on National Highway 17.

The bus proceeding from Payyanur to Kanhangad fell on its side under the impact of the collision.

The bus was carrying a number of schoolchildren, the police said.

The injured were admitted to various hospitals, including the Pariyaram Medical College Hospital, the police said.

Bengaluru, Aug 7: Karnataka Revenue Minister R Ashoka has said that state was prepared to tackle COVID-19 and flood situation.

"Today I had a meeting with officials from disaster management, housing, Police, agriculture departments. The government is ready to tackle both the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the flood situation," he told news agency.

The minister said he had held a meeting with officials to take precautionary measures.
"I sanctioned Rs 20 crore to the Fire Department to purchase the equipment for rescue operations. I have already announced red alert in six districts. Tomorrow, I will visit Kodagu, Chikmagalur to assess rescue operations. NDRF reached have teams for rescue operations," he said.

"We are monitoring all dams. Last time we got more floods because of dams. I have instructed to all district collectors that 70 per cent water be filled in dams. Remaining water be sent to canals. We are expecting more rains in nine districts this year," he added.

Bengaluru, Mar 23: In the wake of the shutdown in several districts of the state to control the COVID-19 spread, Karnataka government on Monday said food would be provided free of cost through Indira Canteen for the poor who depend on daily wages for their livelihood.

The state-sponsored subsidised 'Indira Canteens' as of now serves breakfast at Rs 5 and lunch and dinner at a cost of Rs 10.

"In the interest of the poor, it has been decided to serve free food for poor. Through Indira Canteen, free food will be served for the entire day for the poor," Yediyurappa told reporters.

The Karnataka government has already announced shutdown of all commercial activities, barring essential services, in nine districts where COVID-19 cases have been reported till March 31.

They are: Bengaluru city, Bengaluru Rural, Mangaluru, Mysuru, Kalaburagi, Dharwad, Chikkaballapura, Kodagu and Belagavi.

Kalaburagi, Mar 25: Three coronavirus suspect persons who did not stay home during their mandatory 14-day quarantine period had first information report (FIRs) booked against them in police stations in Kalaburagi town in Karnataka.   

The district administration took this action after it came to know that the three pesons were mingling in the public despite being told to stay home to avoid passing on the coronavirus.

Cases have been booked against them under IPC sections 188 and 271, deputy commissioner B Sharath said.

Stringent action would be taken against them, he said, for not only threatening the health of their family members but society at large.

“The administration will stop at nothing to safeguard public health in this time of emergency,” Sharath said.

People moving around on motorbikes without a proper reason will have their bikes seized. Prohibitory order under Section 144 of CrPC will remain in force until further orders, he said.
