Vittala Malekudiya, father walk free amidst celebration

Mangalore, July 5: More than four months after they were arrested by on charges of alleged links with Naxalites, Mangalore University student Vittala Malekudiya and his father Linganna Malekudiya were finally released on Thursday.

The activists of district units of Communist Party of India (Marxist), Democratic Youth Federation of India and Students Federation of India extended a floral welcome to the duo, who stepped out of the Mangalore prison at around 10:00 am.

Overjoyed by the release of the duo, the activists burst crackers and distributed sweets in front of the prison. Later the two were taken to the district office of CPI (M) in the city.

The Judicial Magistrate First Class Court at Belthangady had granted conditional bail to the father and son, who were arrested by Karnataka's Anti-Naxal Force on March 3 at their home in Kuthlur near Belthangady.

The JMFC Court had ordered their release on the ground of failure of the police in filing charge sheet within 90 days of their arrest. According to Mr. Vittala's counsel Shiva Kumar S.M., the JMFC court observed that the police had not sought extension of time for filing the charge sheet under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, under which the duo have been booked.

The release was subject to production of surety for Rs. 50,000. Among the conditions imposed for the bail was that the duo should appear before the Venoor police station every Sunday. The two have also been asked not to threaten witnesses.

Mangaluru, July 23: Lavanya Ballal, national co-coordinator for social media department of Indian National Congress, has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of destroying the nation by misleading the youth.

In an interview with a regional Kannada news paper, the Dakshina Kannada based activist, lamented that instead of using social media for the welfare of the nation, BJP leaders used it to spread lies for their political gains. 

On one hand BJP fooled people through false promises and colourful dialogues, while on the other hand it misled crores of youth by spreading fake news, twisted facts and false information, she said.

Ms Ballal went on to accuse BJP of following the footsteps of the British. “BJP is following all the methods employed by the British invaders to divide the people of India and make them hate each other,” she said.

She said that Congress always used the social media for the benefit of the country. If the new generation realises this fact, the country will once again turn its direction towards development, she asserted.

Mangaluru, Feb 2: A video of a woman rescuing a dog from a well in Mangaluru has gone viral on social media. The dog fell inside the well accidentally and the woman rushed to the spot to rescue it. The two minute seven second video has been shared on Twitter by a user, Mauna, and has ever since been viewed over 15,000 times.

The woman climbed down the well as other people attached a rope to her body during the rescue mission. Another rope was then thrown to her and she tied it around the dog after which it was pulled outside. The woman, thereafter, climbed outside the well with much difficulty.

"Bless the lady who saved the Dog," the user captioned the post.

Bengaluru, Jul 27: The Karnataka government on Sunday directed the Director General of Police Praveen Sood to submit a detailed report on the internal security following the United Nations' observation that international terror outfit IS was active in the state.

The UN report stated that Al-Qaeda in the Indian subcontinent, which reportedly has between 150 and 200 members from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Myanmar, was reportedly planning attacks in the region.

It also warned that there were 'significant numbers' of ISIS operatives in Karnataka and Kerala. Reacting to the UN report, Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai said the state government has taken a serious note of the report on the activities of IS in the state.

The state government is in touch with the Centre and the neighbouring states to keep a close watch on the activities of suspicious people and their supporters.

"In this context, it has been decided to strengthen the internal security of the state. The Director General of Police has been asked to submit a detailed report," Bommai said in a release.

The state is also keeping a strict vigil on all those entering Bengaluru from other states, the Minister said. He recalled that the state police had arrested several members of Al-Hind organisation in January last and Jamaat- ul-Mujahideen from Bangladesh in 2018 and 2019. He added that the National Investigation Agency is investigating the case of JMB.
