Mangalore, July 6: It seems that the administration and the police yet to wake up from deep slumber as packed autos continue to ply on city roads.

On Thursday evening, a nine-year-old schoolgirl was injured when she fell off an autorickshaw near Valencia.

Rishel D'Costa, a class 3 student at St. Agnes English School was among the eight students travelling on the autorickshaw. The girl standing on the overcrowded autorickshaw was thrown off when the driver applied brakes to avoid hitting a scooter. The driver then took the girl, a resident of Nagori, to the Father Muller Hospital for treatment.

The autorickshaw driver said he was driving the vehicle slowly but the two-wheeler rider was on his mobile phone and turned his vehicle without giving any signals. The driver said Rishel was standing at one end of the passenger's seat. Mother of Rishel, however, did not want to speak about the accident. The doctor treating Rishel said the child had abrasions on the head and hands. No case was registered with the police. A spokesperson of the school said they did not have any control over the number of the children travelling in an autorickshaw.

“We take care of children on the school premises. We cannot do much about what happens outside.” Regional Transport Officer C. Mallikarjuna said only six children could be carried in an autorickshaw.

As per traffic rules, only six children can travel in an auto but eight students were travelling in his auto.
