Mangalore, July 6: There are striking similarities between the scenarios of the seventh century Arabia and the 21st century world. The teachings of the Quran are as relevant to the contemporary world as it was during the dawn of Islam, said Dr Sayed Akheel Ahmed, Dean, Faculty of Science and Technology, Mysore University.

Delivering the keynote address at the releasing ceremony of the Kannada translation of the first volume of the 'Tafheem-ul-Quran' at Town Hall here on Friday, Dr. Ahmed reminded Muslims of their primary duty of presenting the message of Quran to the people of the country.

Listing the major similarities of the two eras, Dr Ahmed said that while the resurgence of Islam was the important aspect of the seventh century AD, resurgence of knowledge is the significant facet of 21st century.

Stating that the modern world is facing three major challenges namely globalisation, knowledge and change, he pointed out that Quran gives guidance on all the three important aspects confronting the mankind today.

Dr Ahmed lamented that even though the Muslims ruled the Indian subcontinent for around 1000 years they could not present the message of the Quran before the people of this country.

Dr Thalthaje Vasanth Kumar, retired chairman, Department of Kannada, Mumbai University, who formally released the book, said the new work was a unique gift for those Kannadiga's who have a thirst for knowledge.

Admiring the value of fraternity preached by Islam which had turned the most uncivilised people of world into the torchbearers of civilisation, Mr Kumar said that the role of the Quran and the teachings of the prophet played a key role in that regard.

Stating that one cannot target a religion if some of its followers committed mischiefs, he urged the people to understand the true message of Quran and take maximum benefit of the Kannada translation of 'Tafheem-ul-Quran'. “This work is so unique that all Kannadigas should try to imbibe its values,” he added.

In his remarks B.S. Sharfuddin, visiting faculty, IGNOU Centre, Kuwait, recalled how the senior litterateurs of Karnataka wholeheartedly welcomed the Kannada translation of the abridged version of the 'Tafheem-ul-Quran' that was released across major cities of Karnataka around 15 years ago.

He also pointed out that Quran is the only revealed book which has stood the test of time and remained unchanged for more than 1,400 years.

Pradeep Kumar Kalkura, President, DK Zilla Kannada Sahitya Parishat, congratulated 'Shanti Prakashana' for enriching the Kannada literature by contributing around 250 literary works.

He called upon Muslims to cultivate a sense of nationalism along with adhering to the teachings of Islam.

P. Noor Mohammed Uppinangady, the translator also spoke. Dr Muhammad Sa'ad Belgami, General Secretary, Jamaath-e-Islami Hind, Karnataka, presided over the programme. Mohammed Kunhi, joint secretary, Jamaath-e-Islami Hind Karnataka, welcomed the gathering. Rahmathullah Master compered the programme and delivered a vote of thanks. K.M. Ashraf, secretary, Jamaath-e-Islami Hind, Kanratka, K.M. Sharief were present on the occasion.

Apr 23: An FIR has been registered in Nagpur against Republic TV channel's editor Arnab Goswami for promoting social disharmony and accusing Congress President Sonia Gandhi of orchestrating the Palghar lynching.

Three Mumbai residents, including two sadhus, who were on their way to Silvassa on April 16, were lynched by a mob in Gadakchinchale village of Palghar district on the suspicion that they were thieves. Nagpur Police Commissioner B K Upadhyaya said they received a complaint which was turned into an FIR at Sadar police station.

DCP Vinita Sahu said Goswami has been booked under sections 117 (abetting commission of offence by the public or by more than 10 persons), 120 (B) (criminal conspiracy), 153 (A) (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony), 153 (B) (imputations, assertions prejudicial to national-integration), 295 (A) (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs), 290-A (public nuisance in cases not otherwise provided for), 500 (defamation), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the ipc. Another FIR was filed against him in Raipur, Chhattisgarh.

In a statement condemning Goswami, Maharashtra Congress said the killing has been wrongly given a communal angle despite ample proof of the contrary. "At a time when country is fighting against coronavirus pandemic, it is very unfortunate that a section of media as well as politicians are trying to create social unrest... [and] spread racial and religious hatred in society. Goswami has tried to create misogyny against women in the society. He made an outrageous remark against the Congress president on a live TV programme. This is completely unethical journalism and we publicly protest it. We believe in brotherhood and cannot accept such animosity. This will be dangerous for the unity and integrity of the country (sic)," it said.

Chennai, Feb 5: In order to ensure housing for all, the Madras High Court has proposed ban on non-resident Indians from purchasing houses in India, prohibit speculative sale, and impose 100 per cent extra stamp duty on purchase of second house.

The court on its own impleaded the Union housing and finance ministries as party respondents.

It has directed them to answer a series of questions including as to how many families have basic amenity of housing in India as well as in Tamil Nadu, population and housing ratio in the country and in the state, when 'Housing for All' mission of the central government would be achieved.

"Why the government does not consider imposing such restrictions to control escalation of house prices and to provide a house to every family in the country, a division bench of Justice N Kirubakaran and Justice Abdul Quddhose wondered.

Directing the authorities to inform as to whether the central and state have got special schemes to provide housing for the marginalized and economically weaker sections including SC/ST communities, the bench has also sought the details of the number of families that possess more than one house.

"Why the governments do not restrict families/individuals from purchasing/possessing more than one housing unit/flat/plot till "Housing for all" is achieved?

Why not the government charge 100 per cent more or extra stamp duty to discourage buying more than one house by a family while purchasing second house?

Why not the government conditionally allow the families to purchase more than one house provided the said family pays 100 per cent extra statutory dues like property tax, electricity charges, water and sewerage charges on the second property?" the bench said.

This apart, the court also wanted the authorities to know as to why it should not prohibit the NRIs from purchasing houses in India to bring down the cost of housing.

Justifying its directions, the court said "Lakhs and lakhs of people are living on platforms, roads, and cement pipes, slums, under the trees and on banks of water bodies without proper shelter and basic amenities and safety."

It is true that the Centre had taken a policy decision to provide housing unit to every family.

It should be achieved at the earliest, the court said, adding it could become fruitful when restrictions are put on persons who hold more than one housing units.

The court passed the order while hearing an appeal moved by the Tamil Nadu Housing Board challenging a single judge order against acquisition of about 369 acres of private land in Thudiyalur and Vellakinar areas of Coimbatore for a housing scheme.
