Mangalore, July 10: At least two persons were injured and the reception area of a government hospital ransacked on Sunday night near Belthangady in an incident that is alleged to have been communally motivated.

In his complaint, Javed Iqbal (25) has alleged that he was beaten up by members of a Hindu organisation near Manjutti, while his friend Abdul Hamid suffered injuries after the same group followed them to Government General Hospital, Belthangady.

Complaint

Meanwhile, Vasudev (45), who was named as an accused by Javed, filed a complaint claiming to have been roughed up by a group of Muslim men, including Javed and Hamid, at Indabetta nearby.

Lying in the same ward of the hospital, Javed and Vasudev narrate two different versions of Sunday's events.

According to Mr. Iqbal, he and his brother were travelling by car from Belthangady towards Navoor around 9.45 p.m., when a group of “inebriated” people stopped them at Manjutti and attacked them. While his younger brother suffered only minor injuries, Mr. Iqbal had to be admitted in Belthangady hospital.

Lying two beds away, Vasudev said he had stopped his car by the road to talk to a friend. Javed came in a car. Angered by his honking people who were standing nearby picked a fight with Javed. He said he was attacked although he was not involved.

Claim

Mr. Vasudev claimed that he had never met the other persons accused in the complaint filed by Javed. However, a resident doctor at the hospital identified him to be among 20 men who gathered at the hospital around 11.15 p.m.

When they were denied entry, they allegedly started breaking chairs, throwing stones, and soda bottles at the nurses.

“Abdul Hamid was injured after the bottle hit him.” Belthangady police said the accused in both FIRs had not been arrested as they had been reported “absconding”.

Mysuru, Jan 27: Chief minister BS Yediyurappa on Sunday refused to field questions on the state’s finances, merely saying his budget on March 5 will do the talking. The question came in the wake of Siddaramaiah, leader of the opposition, claiming recently that the state’s coffers were dry and its finances were in the doldrums.

However, Yediyurappa insisted the state’s finances were sound and it will be better once promises made by the business community during his trip to Davos turn into concrete investment.

“I will present the budget for 2020-21 on March 5. People will then know about the state’s financial position,” Yediyurappa said during a visit to Suttur Mutt on Sunday. “I will answer Siddaramaiah’s comments during the forthcoming budget session of the state legislature. The Davos meet I attended will benefit the state immensely. It will bring huge investments that will promote industry and agriculture growth and various job-generation activities.”

Bengaluru, Mar 5: At 11 am on Friday, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa will present the State Budget for the 2020-2021 fiscal. Coming at a time when the state is facing financial challenges, the budget is expected to have minor tax shocks for citizens, while making space for big-ticket allocations to the agriculture and water resources ministries. Thursday's budget will be Yediyurappa’s seventh.

“Agriculture is our primary focus. The recent gazette notification of the Mahadayi tribunal order is a welcome move for Karnataka and we will make budgetary allocations for this too,” the CM had said.

The cut back in devolution of funds for Karnataka from the divisible pool, trimming of funds from the Union Government for Centrally-sponsored schemes and tax collections falling short of revenue targets have made matters tough for Yediyurappa. The consolation may be the part payment of one installment of GST compensation from the Centre. The GST compensation, in part for the October-November period, was released to the state in time for tabling of the budget.
