Students of University College boycott classes

Mangalore, July 10: Students of University College, a constituent of Mangalore University, boycotted classes on Monday as they wanted the college authorities to rectify rainwater leakage in classrooms and take steps to prevent water stagnation at the entrance of the college.

Students demanded a cleaner premises. They asked authorities to fix bolts inside doors of all toilets used by women. The Registrar (administration) of Mangalore University K. Chinnappa Gowda told The Hindu that four students had boycotted classes on June 28. They had not issued any letter (regarding boycotting classes) to the Principal as required by the rules of the college.

The disciplinary committee of the college which met following this incident slapped a penalty of Rs. 500 on each of the four students. In addition, each of them were asked to deposit Rs. 3,000 as caution deposit which was refundable. They were asked to bring their parents. The four students had agreed to this. These students, however, again boycotted classes with a few more joining them on Monday stating that they would not pay the caution deposit. The disciplinary committee which met again agreed to waive the caution deposit but asked them to pay the penalty.

Sources in the college said that some students in the college boycotted the classes as they wanted to project themselves as leaders as election to students' union for 2012-13 was approaching.

Nalin Kumar Kateel hits out at Kharge for anti-Modi remark

Chitradurga, Feb 10: President of the BJP State unit Nalin Kumar Kateel on Sunday hit out at Congress leader M. Mallikarjun Kharge for allegedly likening Prime Minister Narendra Modi to a “zero candle bulb”.

Mr. Kateel told reporters here that Mr. Modi was a “1,000 watt bulb that gave light to the world”, and compared Mr. Kharge to a lamp that had burned out politically.

Mr. Kateel charged that Mr. Kharge had become frustrated after losing the elections and after his party did not even consider him for a Rajya Sabha seat. And this had made the Congress leader to make wild charges against the Prime Minister.

Lashing out at the Congress, Mr. Kateel alleged that the Congress was continuing the “divide and rule” policy of the British and accused the former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda of being the “other face of the Congress”.

Mr. Kateel also came down on the former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. He ridiculed the Congress for the delay in choosing a new KPCC chief after Dinesh Gundu Rao submitted his resignation.

Karnataka intensifies lockdown; no mass prayers in mosques, churches till Mar 31

Bengaluru, Mar 23: Karnataka government today decided to go for complete lockdown. This includes the closure of all non essential government offices, suspension of all public transport services and banning of mass prayers in places of worships across the state.

Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa had expressed the need for a complete lockdown like the Janta Curfew on Sunday. Going by this, there will be no government transport services at least till March 31 and as many as 19,000 government buses will be off the road.

The government also decided to cancel the famous Karaga festival. The CM said that all celebrations and functions will be called off along with mass prayers in mosques and churches.

The CM said that they have decided to procure 1,000 ventilators and 10 lakh face masks in addition to other health equipments.

Private hospitals have come forward to spare their doctors and nursing staff to attend to Covid-19 patients in government hospitals, the CM said.

Yediyurappa also said that he has directed the health department to paste notification on the houses of residents who are infected with coronavirus. This is being done after people with indelible seals and home quarantined are reported to be roaming freely. The notifications will help neighbours to keep an eye on them.

The CM said the government-run Indira Canteen will serve free food to the poor until the lockdown continues. He also said that action will be initiated against non essential shops that are open despite a directive to shut down.

Karnataka Congress constitutes task force to monitor COVID-19 spread

Bengaluru, Mar 27: Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) on Friday formed a task force to monitor the spread of COVID-19 disease in the state and provide guidelines and suggestions to contain its proliferation in the state.

In a press release, the KPCC has stated that the 15 member committee will be headed by the senior Congress leader and former Health minister K R Rameshkumar also included two other former health ministers, Shivanand Patil and U T Khader as the members of the committee.
