M'lore: Sahana Kumari felicitated

Mangalore, July 10: Ullal girl Sahana Kumari, who has been selected to represent India at the upcoming London Olympics, was felicitated at Gokarnatheshwara College here on Monday.

Ms. Kumari has been selected to represent India in the long jump category in the Games.

Speaking after the felicitation, Ms. Kumari, a student of Gokarnatheshwara College, thanked the College authorities for supporting her right from giving her admission without taking a look at her marks to the cooperation extended by her teachers.

Sports trainer Purushottam Poojary praised Ms. Kumari for her achievements in his address.

Narasimha Murthy, lecturer, sharing his thoughts about Ms. Kumari said that she had achievements at the national level to her credit even when she was a student of the College four years ago. She would wake up at 5 am and sprint from Ullal to Mangala Stadium in Mangalore and practice there. Her sister Harshini Kumari has achieved national level success in High Jump. Her brother Gaurav Kumar has excelled in volleyball. Her parents have encouraged her and her siblings to make it big in sports, he said.

Ms. Kumari's husband Nagaraj is also an international level athlete. He had represented India at the Beijing Olympics in the 100 mts sprint and 400 mts relay competitions. He had also participated in the Commonwealth Games. He has been encouraging Ms. Kumari continuously, Mr. Murthy said.

A total amount of Rs. 50,000 comprising of Rs. 25,000 from the College authorities and Rs. 25,000 from Harish Sherigar of Dubai, an alumnus of the College was presented to Ms. Kumari on the occasion.

Udupi, Jul 26: Two persons including a lady doctor have been arrested by the Kaup police in Udupi district for trying to use fake salary documents to avail loan from a bank to buy a car. 

According to police, on July 24, the doctor had visited Bank of Baroda's branch office at Kaup Moodabettu. She had approached the branch manager for a car loan for herself and her brother. She claimed that her monthly salary is Rs 2.66 lakh.

The bank verified the details furnished along with the loan application. The bank found that even though the doctor had furnished salary slips of Manipal Academy of Higher Education, she was presently not employed there.

The bank manager has filed a complaint at Kaup police station, accusing the doctor of trying to cheat the bank by availing loan on the basis of fake documents.

The police registered a case and nabbed her when she visited the Katapady branch of the same bank today. The police also arrested a man, who according to the doctor, created fake documents for her.

Mangaluru, Mar 23: In its efforts to contain the outbreak of COVID-19, the district administration has ordered that all shops and establishments selling essential commodities to remain open only between 0600 hrs and 1200 hrs from Tuesday till March 31.

Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh, in a press release here, announced that autorickshaws and taxis should not ferry passengers and should be utilised only during emergencies and for transportation of essential commodities among others.

Ms Sindhu has also ordered shutting down industries. Only those industries involved in the production of essential commodities, medicines, medical instruments, medicine, fuel, farm produce among others had been exempted, Please log in to get detailed story.

Bengaluru, Jun 18: Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has deployed a COVID-19 infection control "surveillance team" to look after travellers coming from other states.

Those coming to Bengaluru Urban and Bengaluru Rural Districts must undergo a 14-day home quarantine.

The Bengaluru Mayor today inaugurated surveillance team at Dr Raj Kumar Glass House.

Deputy Mayor Ramamohan Raju, Health Standing Committee Chairman Manjunath Raju G, Special Commissioners D Randeep, Manjunath, Superintendent of Police Mr Murugan and other officials were also present in the event.

There are 7,944 coronavirus cases in Karnataka including 2,843 active cases and 4,983discharged. 114 patients have succumbed to COVID-19 in the state. 844 positive cases were reported in Bengaluru Urban and 39 in Bengaluru Rural.
