Fr Antony Joseph D'Souza of Mangalore Diocese dies

Mangalore, July 10: Rev. Fr Antony Joseph D'Souza, who was a priest of the Diocese of Mangalore, passed away on Monday July 9 at 11 p.m. in a private hospital in Mangalore. He was 80 years old and a priest for the last 53 years.

His funeral Mass would be conducted at St Vincent Ferrer Church, Valencia at 4.00 p.m. on Wednesday July 11 and the mortal remains would be interred at priests' cemetery in Valencia.


He was born in Kulur Parish on November 25th 1931 as the son of Sebastian D'Souza and Agnes Mathias.

After the priestly studies at St Joseph's Seminary, Mangalore he was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Mangalore on the 2nd of March 1959.

After being the assistant parish priest of Barkur (3 years) and Karkala Attur (2 years) parishes, he was the Vicar Oeconomus (in-charge) of Perdal Parish from 1964-`70. He was the Parish Priest of Nekraje for 5 years, Kelmbet for 7 years, Padukone for 7 years, Perampalli for 7 years, Karady for 7 years. He was the chaplain of Olavinahally for a year.

Having retired from the active priestly ministry in 2004, till to date he lived in Kankanady Vianney Home, the home for the retired priests.


According to Rev. Dr Aloysius Paul D'Souza, the Bishop of the Diocese of Mangalore, Fr Antony Joseph was a soft spoken priest and has taken care of the spiritual needs of the people with a committed and prayerful approach.


According to Msgr Denis Prabhu the Vicar General of Mangalore Diocese, Fr Antony Joseph is from a very devout family from Kulur. He was a hard working priest who disturbed no one. He was so committed to his work that he would always remain in the parish wherever he was. If anyone was in need Fr Antony would respond positively to help. He would finish his work in time.

He was the son of a renowned teacher from Kulur because of which he was called as a `mesthricho puth' (son of a teacher). Even though there was no high school then in Kulur and it was difficult to cross the river and come towards Mangalore for studies, the parents of Fr Antony were very instrumental in making him a educated youth.

Being sick for many years because of paralysis, diabetes and other ailments he suffered patiently nearly last 10 years. One of his legs was amputated some time back. The Bishop, Vicar General and Chancellor of the Diocese of Mangalore have condoled his death.

Bengaluru, May 18: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Monday said that people from Gujarat, Maharashtra, Kerala and Tamil Nadu will not be allowed in the state till May 31.

"We have decided not to allow entry of people from Gujarat, Maharashtra, Kerala and Tamil Nadu till May 31," Yediyurappa said after a meeting with state ministers and senior government officers to discuss the guidelines issued by the Centre regarding the fourth phase of nationwide lockdown.

"State road transport corporation buses in Karnataka and private buses will run. Strict lockdown measures in containment zones and economic activities will be permitted in other areas. Sundays will be total lockdown across the state. Home quarantine will be strengthened," he added.

The Chief Minister further said that all shops will be allowed to open and all trains running within the state will be permitted.

The central government on Sunday extended the ongoing COVID-19 induced nationwide lockdown till May 31, but with a set of new relaxations commencing from Monday. The Union Home Ministry has also given powers to States/UTs demarcate areas in Green, Orange and Red zones, which will allow them to start activities except in containment zones.

According to the guidelines, "all other activities will be permitted except those which are specifically prohibited under these guidelines. However, in containment zones, only essential activities shall be allowed, as mentioned earlier."

Mangaluru, Mar 1: Karnataka Minister for Major and Medium Industries Jagadish Shettar said that the flight service between Mangaluru and Hubballi will begin on March 29 under UDAN scheme.

Speaking to reporters on the sideline of the meeting of Industries Commerce of Magaluru, here on Saturday evening, he said while the city of Ports is the second busiest international airport after Bengaluru in Karnataka, other places, namely Hubballi, Belagavi, Kalaburagi and Bidar, have come on the air map with the UDAN scheme.

Stating that UDAN launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was what the Golden Quadrilateral highway project of former Prime Minister A B Vajpayee had envisaged, Mr. Shettar noted that more flights are operating to and from Mangaluru now. This has paved the way for Industrialisation of the important city on the Bombay-Karnataka region, he added.

Mangaluru, Jul 29: Ahead of popular Hindu festival Raksha Bandhan, Karnataka postal circle has introduced an online portal 'Rakhi Post' to deliver rakhis across the country amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

This year Raksha Bandhan will be celebrated on Monday, August 3.

This service can be used to send rakhis to people across the country without violating the coronavirus norms.

Speaking to news agency, Senior Superintendent of Post offices, Shriharsha N said, "I am happy to announce that Karnataka postal circle has introduced an online portal 'rakhi post' to deliver rakhis to people during coronavirus phase."

"People willing to avail this service can visit this portal and pay a nominal amount of Rs 100 to send a rakhi," Shriharsha said.

The official has suggested to avail the service before July 31 for the timely delivery of rakhis.

The portal is also offering a special service to send rakhis to the soldier deployed on the borders. "We have also introduced a unique feature to deliver rakhis to Indian soldiers on the borders," he added.
