Mangalore, Udupi lawyers boycott work, proceedings affected

Mangalore, July 11: Functioning in all courts in twin districts of coastal Karnataka Wednesday got paralyzed when lawyers joined the two-day strike called by the Bar Council of India.

Members of Mangalore Bar Association and Udupi Bar Association have joined the strike in protest against the proposed legislation that could affect its autonomy and the entry of foreign law institutes and universities in the country.

In Mangalore dozens of lawyers took out a rally from the court premises in the morning and gathered in front of the Office of Deputy Commissioner.

Addressing the agitators, Mangalore Bar Association President S P Changappa said that the draft of Higher Education and Research Bill 2011which was expected to be tabled for discussion in the Parliament session, would curb the functions and powers entrusted to it and State Bar Councils on issues related to legal education and framing of the syllabus in the country.

He also said that the proposed Bill envisages the formation of a National Commission comprising academicians and others to look into the legal education. The National Commission will deprive the representative of Bar Council to have their say while forming the policies on legal education.

Mr Changappa said the Bill would sideline and harm the freedom of the advocates and their elected statutory bodies in connectioon with legal education and legal profession. “The Bill is also an attack on Advocates Act of 1961.”

“We are also opposed to 'National accreditation regulatory authority for higher educational institution Act 2010,' 'The foreign educational institution regulation of entry and operation Bill 2010,' 'The prohibition of unfair practices in higher educational institution Bill 2010' 'The National Law Schools Bill 2011' and 'Motor Vehicle Act 2011,” he said.

Mr Changappa alleged that the HRD ministry's negligence has resulted in poor quality of higher education in law. The Bar Council of India is responsible for education policy pertaining to degree and not at the higher education level. The Association has also opposed TO allow the foreign Institution and law firms in India.

The protesters burnt the effigy of union human resource development minister Kapil Sibal. They also submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner demanding the Central government to withdraw the proposed Bill.

DGCA bars private jets from flying Indian expats back to UAE

Dubai, Jul 8: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has revoked landing permits issued to UAE-based private jets flying Indian expats who are willing to fly back to UAE. With this the operation of private jets from India to the UAE has stopped.

The development comes days after DGCA stopped UAE airlines from chartering repatriation flights to India.

The DGCA’s decision has come as a huge disappointment for desperate expats who are trying every means possible to return to the UAE, and were shelling out up to Dh15,000 per ticket.

All charter flights were operating with the appropriate permissions and clearances for the specific mission, route and destination, said the charterers.

DC Aviation Al-Futtaim, the only integrated VIP handling and hangar facility in DWC, said in an official statement: "As a result of the DGCA suspension of flights into India, our Challenger 604 aircraft which was scheduled to land in Dubai today has been affected."

Afi Ahmed, managing director of Smart Travels, said he has received news from official sources that all approvals for operation of private jets have been barred until July 10.

"Even the flights that had been given approvals stand cancelled. Some flights organised on July 9 have also been grounded," said Ahmed, who was also stranded in Kochi, Kerala, till July 4 but returned home in the UAE on-board Global 6,000, the largest business jet, organised by a Dubai-based aviation company.

Ganesh Rayapudi, a UAE-based businessman who has been trying to organise flights from India to UAE, said: "The government has kept on hold all charters. At least 52 passengers were desperately waiting to come back from Hyderabad on these flights and were willing to collectively cough up Dh400,000."

He added: "I agree that it is unfair to those who cannot afford these prices. However, UAE residents have commitments here; they were tired of waiting and willing to go any lengths, including taking the expensive route."

On July 3, India's DGCA announced via an official circular that scheduled international flights will remain suspended till month-end and only those on a case-to-case basis will be allowed to operate. These flights were suspended on March 22 due to the ongoing pandemic.

35-yr-old CIB officer found dead inside his car in Bekal

Kasaragod, Jan 3: A serving officer of the Central Intelligence Bureau (CIB) was found dead inside his car in Bekal town near here early on Friday.

Police sources said the officer, Rijo Francis (35) has been under treatment after he had an heart attack last year.

Police suspect that the death could be due to heart failure.

Karnataka NRI Forum Jeddah repatriates 177 stranded Kannadigas from Saudi Arabia

Jeddah: The first chartered flight for repatriation passengers from Jeddah to Bengaluru organized by Karnataka NRI Forum Jeddah – Saudi Arabia was successfully landed at Bengaluru airport by 01.00 am on 19th July 2020.

Spice Jet (SG9884) departed from King Abdul Aziz International Airport Jeddah by 05.00 pm local time with 177 stranded passengers which includes 12 Pregnant Woman, 3 infants, 44 Short term visa holders, 3 medical emergency patients and 115 migrate workers and labours from various districts of Karnataka state.

Karnataka NRI Forum Jeddah, a registered charitable organization under Government of Karnataka & Indian Consulate Jeddah - Saudi Arabia, helping the Kannadigas overseas & in Karnataka State as well, has initiated major role for helping stranded Kannadigas to travel back to home. During Pandemic hundreds of stranded Kannadigas were approached to the forum and requested to arrange special chartered flight to Bengaluru from Jeddah.

Initiating from collecting the data of passengers, the forum’s special panel including its President Mr. Mohammed Mansoor, Secretary Mr. Peter Mascarenes, Vice Presidents Mr. Nasir Khurshid, Dr.Ashfaque Maniyar, Chief Coordinator Mr. Shaikh Saoud, Cultural Secretaries Mr. Arifulla Shariff and Mr. Rajesh Suvarna, Treasurer Mr. Habib Rahman and Press Secretary Mr. Baig, the forum’s members have worked very hard to conclude this task very successful.
