Udupi, July 13: Upset over being denied a ministerial berth, ruling BJP MLA from Kundapur constituency Halady Srinivasa Shetty on Friday announced his decision to resign from the Assembly.

A three-time MLA and a popular leader of Udupi District, Mr Shetty is expected to submit his resignation letter in the office of Assembly Speaker K G Bopaiah.

Speaking to media persons in Bangalore he said that "heeding" to the calls by his followers and voters of his Kundapur constituency he had decided to resign as MLA.

Accusing the BJP leadership of neglecting and cheating the coastal districts of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts, Mr. Shetty said that he had not aspired to become a minister and neither lobbied for a ministerial berth.

He accused the party of giving him last minute assurances and withdrawing the same, thereby cheating him. The party has cheated and insulted him and the voters of the coastal region, he said.

Meanwhile, people in Kundapur observed a bandh protesting against the "ill-treatment" meted out to their MLA after inviting him to swearing-in ceremony. His supporters staged a road blockade disrupting traffic.

Supporters of Mr. Shetty were seen protesting against the sidelining of their leader and even shouted slogans against Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat for allegedly playing a part in ensuring that Mr. Shetty did not get a ministerial berth.

Barring state run KSRTC buses, all vehicles remained off the road and shops and business establishments downed shutters in Kundapur.

However, K S Eshwarappa, Deputy Chief Minister, told reporters in Mysore that D V Sadananda Gowda, who hails from Dakshina Kannada district, will be given a suitable post soon.

Mangaluru, July 23: Lavanya Ballal, national co-coordinator for social media department of Indian National Congress, has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of destroying the nation by misleading the youth.

In an interview with a regional Kannada news paper, the Dakshina Kannada based activist, lamented that instead of using social media for the welfare of the nation, BJP leaders used it to spread lies for their political gains.

On one hand BJP fooled people through false promises and colourful dialogues, while on the other hand it misled crores of youth by spreading fake news, twisted facts and false information, she said.

Ms Ballal went on to accuse BJP of following the footsteps of the British. “BJP is following all the methods employed by the British invaders to divide the people of India and make them hate each other,” she said.

She said that Congress always used the social media for the benefit of the country. If the new generation realises this fact, the country will once again turn its direction towards development, she asserted.

Belagavi, Jan 17: Maharashtra Minister of State for Public Health, Medical Education, FDA and Textiles Rajendra Patil-Yadravkar who had come here to participate in the martyrs day programme of Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES) was detained by the police and escorted back till the state borders on Friday.

MES had organised its annual martyrs day programme at Hutatma Circle here. Its leaders had earlier been asked by the District Administration and City Police to ensure that none of the political leaders from Maharashtra participate and create law and order problems by their anti-state statements.

Patil had managed to sneak into the city through a route which was not manned by the police. He came in an auto-rickshaw to the programme venue.

Police personnel present for security took him into their custody and later escorted him till the state’s borders with Maharashtra at Kognoli on the Pune-Bengaluru national highway.

MES leaders alleged that the police personnel violated protocol while taking the incumbent minister into their custody and they also roughed him up.

All vehicles entering the city from different routes and particularly from Maharashtra were screened to confirm that political leaders from the neighbouring state do not participate in the martyrs day programme and create problems by their statements that also affect law and order along with linguistic harmony.

It was not known if Patil had landed in the city on Thursday and managed to reach the programme venue without getting noticed by using an auto-rickshaw.
