Tulu scholar Venkitaraja Puninchithaya dies at 75

Kasargod, July 14: P. Venkitaraja Puninchithaya, 75, noted Tulu scholar and litterateur, died of age-related ailments at 3.30 p.m. his residence at Bellur in the district on Friday.


Regarded as patriarch of modern Tulu language, Puninchithaya was the first president of the State Tulu Academy set up at Manjeswaram to promote the language spoken by a sizeable number of people in the district and parts of Karnataka's Dakshina Kannada district. He had translated many Tulu epics into Kannada.


He was also well-versed in Sanskrit, Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi, and English.

The Mangalore University had bestowed honours on him for completing 32 research works in Tulu language.

He had translated the works of Vaikkom Muhammed Basheer and M.T. Vasudevan Nair into Kannada.

He was a teacher at Edaneer Swamiji Higher Secondary School and he won the national award for the best teacher in 1957-58. Puninchithaya is survived by wife, Vanitha, a son, and two daughters.

Kochi, Mar 9: A three-year old child has tested positive for the novel coronavirus, officials said in Kochi on Monday.

The child and its parents who had reached the Cochin International Airport Limited at 6 AM on March 7 from Italy were subjected to thermal screening at the universal surveillance system established, officials said.

Detecting symptoms of coronavirus in the child, they were immediately referred to the isolation ward of the Kalamassery Medical College Hospital, they said. The samples of the child sent for examination at the NiV lab at Alappuzha have tested positive for Coronavirus, they said.

The samples of the parents have also been sent for lab test, the officials added.

Five fresh coronavirus cases, including three who evaded screening on return from Italy, were reported in Kerala, prompting the government on Sunday to sound a renewed alert and warn action against those hiding travel history to affected nations.

Kasaragod, Apr 30: The Kasaragod District Collector Sajith Babu, his gun man and driver has entered in quarantine on Wednesday.

According to sources, the Collector had been asked to go on quarantine after the reports of a journalist, who interviewed him, was tested positive for the virus.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan at his routine evening press conference revealed the positivity of the journalist.

Bengaluru, May 18: Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Mallikarjuna Kharge on Monday slammed the State Government’s decision to appoint administrative committees to Panchayats, which completes their five-year term, shortly.

Speaking to media persons, the Congress leader described the State Government’s decision on appointing committees as a ‘death knell ‘ to the basic characters of the Panchayat bodies, which were elected on a non-party basis.

Strongly recommending the BJP-led government to desist from its decision, Kharge urged Chief minister B S Yediyurappa to extend the term of the elected bodies of the Panchayats by six months.
