One killed, four injured as Omni rams into tree

Bhatkal, July 14: A man was killed on spot and four others sustained severe injuries when a Maruti Omni rammed into a tree at Shirali near here on Saturday morning.

Police have identified the deceased as Ibraheem Shahul Hameed (28), who had come home around two months ago from Muscat on a leave. He had recently entered into marital life.

The injured have been identified as driver Ejaz Akbar Sheikh, Sayed Yousuf Sheikh, Arafath Sheikh and Norrul Ameen Sheikh. They have been taken to a private hospital in Kundapur after primary treatment in Bhatkal.

The five members of a family from Thattihakkal in Shirali near here had been to Honnavar on a picnic in the ill-fated Omni on Friday.

The tragedy occurred at around 6:30 am when they were returning home. Source said that the driver lost control over his vehicle when of the tyres of the vehicle was suddenly dislocated.

A case has been registered at jurisdictional police station.

Kasaragod, Jul 14: Kerala State Excise department officials confiscated hawala money to the tune of Rs 2.85 crore from a person hailing from Mangaluru.

According to sources, the officials of the Kumbala Range Excise had noticed the huge baggage containing hundreds of bundles of unaccounted currencies when they intercepted a vehicle at the border check-post at Thoominad in Manjeshwar early on Tuesday morning.

The accused Shamsudheen, who was trying to transport the illegal money into Kerala has been arrested and handed over to the Manjeshwar police authorities for further action, sources added.

Bengaluru, Feb 19: Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa thanked his Kerala counterpart Pinarayi Vijayan for initiating action against those dumping bio-medical and bio-wastes in Karnataka's districts from neighboring state Kerala.

In a statement, he said, "First I would like to thank Kerala Chief Minister Pinnarayi Vijayan for his prompt reaction and response to initiate legal action against the dumpers of bio-medical and bio-waste in our districts neighboring Kerala."

The Karnataka Chief Minister has taken a serious note of the reports in a section of media on alleged dumping of bio-medical waste and bio-waste by people from Kerala in bordering Mysuru, Kodagu and Chamarajnagar districts.

"I have directed deputy commissioners of concerned districts, environment department, and pollution control board to take stock of the situation and check surreptitious activities of individuals and agencies from Kerala who are indulging in this illegal activity. I have also directed the officials to prevent the use of this bio-medical waste by Jaggery units as fuel," Yediyurappa said.

He assured that soon this activity will be checked and ended.

Bengaluru, Apr 4: Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Friday asked Primary and Secondary Education Minister S Suresh Kumar to be the government's spokesperson on the Novel Coronavirus crisis management effort, a move that is being seen as keeping too many cooks from spoiling the broth.

At a high-level meeting to review measures on COVID-19 containment, Mr Yediyurappa is said to have taken exception to his Cabinet colleagues making multiple, and often contradictory statements, leading to confusion.

''The CM has directed Mr Kumar to be the only one to brief the media on COVID-19,'' a source from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) confirmed.
