I never fell at Kalladka Bhat's feet: Haladi

Kundapur, July 15: Kundapur MLA Haladi Srinivas Shetty said that he was not an aspirant for the post of a minister.

“It was the party leaders who directed me to come to Bangalore, to take the oath. The denial of berth after making a promise was not only an insult to me but also to the people of my constituency. I have already made up my mind to tender resignation.

I will not change my mind for any pressure from the political leaders,” announced Shetty.

Speaking to presspersons at his home in Haladi on Saturday, he said that when the BJP government was formed in the State under the leadership of B S Yeddyurappa, he had met Sangh Parivar leader Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat along with senior leader A G Kodgi and had appealed to give him a chance to serve the people.

“I had never fallen on his feet. May be it is the reason for me not getting a berth. There was a conspiracy behind me not getting ministerial berth,” he said.

“I have been in active politics for the last 10 to 15 years. I have not involved in any caste politics while taking up any work during my career. I am not the member of any caste association. When I was not inducted into the cabinet during the previous expansion, many of Bunt association members from Bangalore, Poona, Belgaum and Hubli had approached me and said that they will pressurise the Chief Minister to induct me.

However, I had denied all the proposals. I do not want to be a minister of a particular community.”

“I had decided not to use the government car, if I was given a berth in the cabinet. I wanted to lead a life with self-respect. By calling me to Bangalore, the party leaders have insulted. It has hurt my self-respect,” he said.

Stating that he was not involved in resort politics, Haladi said “I had not rebelled against the party and resorted to resort politics at Goa or Hyderabad. One of the accomplice of Reddy had met me last time and had offered Rs six crore along with a ministerial berth.

But I did not accept the offer,” he said.

A large number of supporters of Haladi gathered in front of his house on Saturday morning itself. In fact, supporters and well-wishers from various parts of the state had come in vehicles to Haladi's house. As there was no parking space in Haladi's house, many had parked their vehicles on either side of Kundapur-Haladi state highway.

'HDK invited me to join JD(S)'

Shetty said that State JD(S) president H D Kumaraswamy had given him an open invitation to join the party. He said: “I have not made up my mind on whether to resign from the primary membership of the BJP or not. I will come to a decision after discussing the issue with my well-wishers and supporters.”

Reacting to State BJP president K S Eshwarappa's statement that none of the party leaders had offered Haladi a ministerial berth, he said, “The party president, who was supposed to unite the party at the legislature party meeting, has succumbed to the pressure of one group. Let the people of the State decide whether he speaks the truth or not.”

He also pointed out that he had never succumbed to 'resort politics' and had remained loyal to the party. “When the Reddy brothers rebelled against the party, they offered me Rs six crore and a ministerial berth, even then I had stood by the party. But now, my trust has been broken,” he said.

Kundapur TP President Belladi Shankar Shetty, ZP Standing Committee on Education President Babu Hegde Theggarse, and others were present.

Karnataka Cong demands judicial inquiry into 'medical procurement scam'

Bengaluru, Jul 23: The opposition party Congress on Thursday demanded a judicial enquiry in the alleged scam in coronavirus related medical equipment procurement by Karnataka government.

However, Deputy chief minister Ashwathnarayan and Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai denied all the allegations.

Leader of Opposition (LoP) and former Chief Minister of Karnataka Siddaramaiah and Karnataka Congress president DK Shivakumar addressed a press conference here and demanded a judiciary enquiry under a sitting High Court judge to investigate "BJP's Corona Scams."

"I made allegations on July 3. Nobody has denied it officially. On July 20, Karnataka Health Minister B Sriramulu and Deputy Chief Minister Ashwathnarayan in a press conference denied my allegations. Today, I furnished 14 documents. If you go through it, you will find corruption and misappropriation in medical equipment purchase," Siddaramaiah said.

"The documents are available with the government, how can they deny their own documents. They are telling that they have spent only Rs 324 crore but according to me the government has spent more than Rs 4,000 crore and nearly Rs 2,000 crore went in the minister and bureaucrats' pockets," he said.

He further said, "Centre has procured 50,000 ventilators under PM Cares at a cost of Rs 4, lakh per unit. Tamil Nadu has procured at Rs 4.78 lakh. But in our state, the price is between Rs 5.6 lakh to Rs 18.2 lakh. Is this not corruption?"

Siddaramaiah also dared the government to step up for an enquiry if they are "honest and transparent".

"I am demanding, constitute a judicial committee headed by sitting high court judge, let there be an enquiry in detail," he said.

DK Shivakumar said that his party has made the allegations based on government documents and media reports showing corruption.

"Karnataka government is purchasing equipment at high rates. We have exposed BJP's Rs 2,000 crore scams today. The government's main focus is to loot. They have paralysed the state administration," he said.
Denying the Congress' allegations, Deputy Chief Minister, Ashwathnarayan said that the government is ready to discuss this in the Assembly house.

"They have alleged Rs 700 crore misappropriation by health department but we have shown we have spent only Rs 290 crore," he said.

Giving details of the SDRF expenditure towards COVID-19 containment he said, "We have released Rs. 23,220.01 lakh in SDRF accounts and they have spent Rs Rs. 15, 918.99 lakh in various activities like migrant relief measures, measures for quarantine, sample collection, screening from March 14 to July 16."

Karnataka Home Minister, Basavaraj Bommai, said, "Karnataka government has spent Rs 506 crores for medical equipment and Rs 1,611 crores for other activities related to combatting COVID-19. So, we have spent Rs 2,117 crores as of now and there is no corruption in it."

Rs 26 lakhs worth gold seized at Mangaluru Airport, one held

Mangaluru, Feb 26: Customs officials at Mangalore International Airport on Wednesday arrested a man for trying to smuggle gold worth over Rs 26 lakh by concealing it in his rectum.

The accused has been identified as Moideen Arzan, a resident of Uppala, Kasaragod.

According to police, he arrived from Dubai by an Air India flight and was attempting to smuggle the gold which he had converted in the form of paste and concealed in rubber capsules inside his rectum.

Mangaluru: Bullet tanker hits bike, kills college student

Mangaluru, Feb 13: A college student was killed when a bullet tanker knocked his motorbike down near Nanthoor Circle in the city today.

The deceased has been identified as Karthik Malya, a resident of Mannegudda. He was a final year degree student of Besant College in the city.

The incident took place when Karthik was from Suratkal to Mangaluru. The bullet tanker reportedly hit the two-wheeler from behind and ran over him. He died on the spot.
