Bangalore, July 16: Targeting ruling BJP and Congress and with an eye on assembly polls next year, JDS today sought to clear doubts about its secular credentials after it formed a coalition government in Karnataka with BJP in 2006.

Addressing a Muslim Convention, organised by JDS, party supremo and former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda said his son H D Kumaraswamy committed a mistake by forming the government with BJP. Kumaraswamy committed the mistake of forming government with BJP as the Congress attempted to divide JDS, Gowda said. "I am not after a chief minister's or any other post. Fighting for secular credentials is important for me than vouching for power," he said.

He described the day as the day of 'shapa vimochane' (redemption from curse) and asked Muslims and their religious heads, who were on stage in large numbers, to 'bless' his son and former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy.

Mr. Gowda said that he had advised his son 'never to betray trust'. The octogenarian politicians said that he now has no further ambition except to ensure that the secular base of his party does not collapse.

Gowda slammed the BJP government for not appointing a member from minority community in the Karnataka Public Service Commission. Gowda said during his tenure as the chief minister, he took the decision to introduce four per cent reservation for minorities in government jobs.

He said his family did not appease Vokkaliga community alone when he was chief minister, but had given five per cent reservation for Lingayat community. "I gave four per cent reservation for Vokkaliga," he said.

Gowda said his party had come to the rescue of the minority people whenever they were in trouble and had written to then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to conduct an inquiry into the Sabarmati Express tragedy.

Kumaraswamy said he took several measures to protect the interests of Muslims even after joining hands with BJP. He said that some parties and individuals were projecting the youth in the Muslim community as fundamentalists and made no honest efforts to give the community its due in education and employment. It was an organised ploy to keep the community out of the mainstream and the Muslims should not fall for vote-bank politics, he said.

He sought to emphasise that it was a decision that his father was always opposed to and hurt by.

MLA and JDS leader Zammer Ahmed Khan, the main organiser of the event at Palace rounds, described Mr. Kumaraswamy as 'the future chief minister' and appealed to Muslims not trust the Congress which had 'betrayed' them repeatedly.

He alleged that Congress were misleading Muslims and using them as vote bank.

May 28: The Karnataka State Election Commission on Thursday announced postponement of gram panchayat polls citing the COVID-19 pandemic.

Out of 6,025 gram panchayats, the tenure of 5,800 gram panchayats will end by June-August 2020.

"After examining the feasibility of conducting general elections to gram panchayats, the State Election Commission, considering the current situation as exceptional circumstance, has decided to temporarily postpone the general elections to the gram panchayats," the SEC said in a release.

It said after examining the situation in the days to come, the decision will be taken on holding the general elections to the gram panchayats.

The CEC also states that report by Deputy Commissioners of districts on holding the elections was verified and it has been found that district administrations are involved in COVID-19 related work and there will be shortage of staff and transport facilities for the elections. Besides, there would be a problem in maintaining law and order.

Last week through a letter to Deputy Commissioners of districts, the commission had sought opinion on holding panchayat polls amid the COVID-19 crisis. It had also pointed out that electoral roll needs to be prepared and reservations had to be allocated as per the new amendments.

Stating that the state election commission's decision to postpone gram panchayat elections was against the provisions of the Karnataka Panchayat Raj Act 1993, the Leader of Opposition Siddaramaiah said the Congress will question this "undemocratic act" in the court of law.

He accused the commission of playing to the BJP's tune and said the congress will protest the decision at gram panchayat level.

Opposition parties in the state, especially congress, have been demanding elections.

The government was in favour of postponement of polls and wants to have administrative committees to govern the panchayats, until the polls are held, according to government sources.

The Congress, raising apprehension about administrative committees, has accused the government of conspiring to have ruling BJP workers as its members.

A congress delegation had last week submitted a petition to State Election Commissioner B Basavaraju and urged the Commission to hold elections.

The congress had even suggested continuation of sitting panchayat members until the polls are held, instead of appointing administrative committees.

Kochi, Mar 9: A three-year old child has tested positive for the novel coronavirus, officials said in Kochi on Monday.

The child and its parents who had reached the Cochin International Airport Limited at 6 AM on March 7 from Italy were subjected to thermal screening at the universal surveillance system established, officials said.

Detecting symptoms of coronavirus in the child, they were immediately referred to the isolation ward of the Kalamassery Medical College Hospital, they said. The samples of the child sent for examination at the NiV lab at Alappuzha have tested positive for Coronavirus, they said.

The samples of the parents have also been sent for lab test, the officials added.

Five fresh coronavirus cases, including three who evaded screening on return from Italy, were reported in Kerala, prompting the government on Sunday to sound a renewed alert and warn action against those hiding travel history to affected nations.
